He retained his unbeaten record in this historic event, crossing the line with his ears pricked, to earn a Timeform rating of 120p, the “p” signifying that he was likely to improve further. This he did, with the pinnacle of his 3yo season coming in the Gr.1 July Cup over six furlongs. Tackling older horses for the first time, he was in the front rank throughout and won by nearly three lengths, even though his nearest pursuers, Advertise and Fairyland, have five Gr.1 successes between them. Ten Sovereigns had earlier started favourite to win the Gr.1 2,000 Guineas and ran well over the longer trip, hampered by racing on the slower part of the track. In also winning a Gr.1 as a 3yo Ten Sovereigns went one better than his highly successful young sire No Nay Never, whose win in the Gr.1 Prix Morny made him one of 11 European 2yo Group winners sired by the outstanding Scat Daddy. Ten Sovereign can be expected to make a fast start to his stallion career. His sire No Nay Never was Europe’s leading first-crop sire in 2018 and Ten Sovereigns’ grandsires Scat Daddy and Exceed And Excel were champion first-crop sire in North America and Australia respectively. Both No Nay Never and Scat Daddy have been successful with many different broodmare sires. The much-missed Scat Daddy owed his 45 Group/Graded winners in the northern hemisphere to 42 different 92
