He was so good when the ground was good or faster that his record stood at ten wins, four seconds and two thirds from 18 starts. He was a Group winner in each of his four seasons in training, starting with a decisive victory in the Gr.2 Vintage Stakes over seven furlongs at Goodwood as a 2YO. He ultimately became a three-time Gr.1 winner in England, a two-time Gr.1 winner in the U.S. and also a two-time Gr.1 winner in Hong Kong. The Prince of Wales’s Stakes, the King George, the Coronation Cup and the Breeders’ Cup Turf were among his major successes. He was also second in the Prix du Jockey-Club. Highland Reel’s bloodlines are similarly impressive. A son of the incomparable Galileo, he is a full-brother to the Gr.1 winner Cape Of Good Hope and to Gr.2 winner Idaho. Their dam, the Gr.1-placed Hveger, is a sister to Elvstroem, a five-time Gr.1 winner from seven furlongs to a mile and a half. This is also the family of champion sprinter Starspangledbanner, a very effective sire of Gr.1-winning two-year-olds. Arguably the most attractive aspect of Highland Reel’s pedigree is that he represents the world-famous Galileo-Danehill nick which has produced 54 black-type winners, headed by 15 Gr.1 winners. Three of those Gr.1 winners - the champion 2yos Teofilo and Frankel and the classic-winning Intello – are proving to be classic influences as stallions and their smart winners provide valuable pointers to the bloodlines likely to suit Highland Reel. 53
