MATING SUGGESTIONS: The tremendous success of the first two crops by Horse of the Year Kingman has translated into some sensational prices for his third-crop yearlings, with colts selling for 2,300,000gns and 1,800,000gns. The first to highlight Kingman’s potential was his spectacular son Calyx. A highly impressive 5-length debut winner at Newmarket on June 9, Calyx reappeared ten days later as one of 23 runners in the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. Despite having to race on the apparently slower part of the course from his high draw, he burst well clear of his group and won well. The next four across the line, which all raced in the other group, included the future Group winners Advertise, Sergei Prokofiev and Shine So Bright. Advertise became a triple Gr.1 winner. Although Calyx missed the rest of the season, he was similarly impressive on his return to action, in the Gr.3 Commonwealth Cup Trial, also at Ascot. Once again he displayed a turn of foot reminiscent of the acceleration which earned Kingman four consecutive Gr.1 victories. The Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup appeared to be at Calyx’s mercy but he suffered a pastern injury when second to Hello Youmzain in the Gr.2 Sandy Lane S. and his career was over. Calyx and his parents Kingman and Helleborine collectively won seven of their eight juvenile starts, the only defeat coming when Helleborine was beaten a length by the future Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Misty For Me in the Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac. Helleborine had previously won the Gr.3 Prix d’Aumale by five lengths from the future Coronation Stakes winner Immortal Verse. Helleborine’s older sister African Rose won the Gr.1 Sprint Cup at Haydock and went on to produce the fast and precocious Frankel filly Fair Eva, winner of the Gr.3 Princess Margaret Stakes. Calyx’s pedigree allows him plenty of options as a stallion. He is free of Sadler’s Wells, Galileo and Danehill. Kingman is already showing promise with daughters of GALILEO , siring a Gr.3 winner and a Listed winner in his first crop, and Calyx’s family has produced a smart 2yo to FRANKEL . Calyx could be a useful means of injecting more precocity into grand-daughters of Galileo, by such as TEOFILO , NEW APPROACH , FRANKEL and AUSTRALIA . Kingman’s Gr.2- placed daughter Jazzique is out of a SADLER’S WELLS mare, and another SADLER’S WELLS mare is the second dam of Kingman’s very smart son Headman. SINGSPIEL is the broodmare sire of Kingman’s Gr.3 2yo winner Boomer. PIVOTAL mares are likely to be ideal for Calyx. Kingman has already sired the speedy Poetry and the talented Roseman from daughters of PIVOTAL , which have enjoyed Gr.1 success with Calyx’s grandsire Invincible Spirit and with another of Invincible Spirit’s sons. GREEN DESERT is going to back in the fourth generation of Calyx’s progeny. Kingman’s record suggests that Calyx could shine with a second line, as Kingman’s speedy Group-placed Listed winner Alligator Alley is out of a CAPE CROSS mare and his Listed winner Raakib Alhawa has a dam by SEA THE STARS . They are therefore inbred 3x3 and 3x4 to GREEN DESERT . The DANEHILL branch is also making its mark with Kingman. His classic-winning son Persian King has a dam by DYLAN THOMAS and the potentially high-class Sangarius has a second dam by DANEHILL . Calyx can be expected to do well with mares by Danehill’s many stallion sons, such as DANSILI , DANEHILL DANCER , EXCEED AND EXCEL , FASTNET ROCK , ROCK OF GIBRALTAR , HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR , DUKE OF MARMALADE , DANETIME , CAMACHO and CLODOVIL . Daughters of KODIAC produce 4x3 to that influential mare Rafha. Kingman already has Group-placed performers with mares by ROYAL APPLAUSE and his son ACCLAMATION . This line is well qualified to help Calyx sire Royal Ascot 2yos. The two lines of MR PROSPECTOR in Calyx’s pedigree will be back in the fifth and sixth generations of his progeny’s pedigree, so there is no obstacle to adding more MR PROSPECTOR blood. Kingman already has a 2yo Listed winner from a KINGMAMBO mare, a Gr.2 winner from a KING’S BEST mare and a talented filly out of a mare by King- mambo’s son LEMON DROP KID . Calyx should suit these KINGMAMBO line mares. Invincible Spirit has 13% black-type winners, including four Group winners, out of MACHIAVELLIAN mares. Calyx would be interesting with daughters of some of the successful stallions with dams by MACHIAVELLIAN , especially when ZOFFANY , DARK ANGEL and SHAMARDAL are all qualified to reinforce Calyx’s remarkable juvenile ability. Then there’s LOPE DE VEGA , with his close inbreeding to MACHIAVELLIAN . GIANT’S CAUSEWAY sired the second dam of Kingman’s classic-winning son Persian King and the dam of his Group-placed daughter Sicilia. This again suggests daughters of SHAMARDAL and FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND .
