Edward Teach (c. 1680–1718), better known as Blackbeard, was an English pirate who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of Britain's North American colonies. He captured a French slave ship known as La Concorde, renamed her Queen Anne's Revenge, equipped her with 40 guns, and crewed her with over 300 men. Known for his fearsome image and daring acts on land and sea, Teach was romanticised after his death and became the inspiration for the archetypal pirate in works of fi ction across many genres. Our own Blackbeard has done his fair share of plundering around Europe in his juvenile year winning no less than six races in three countries. Better bred, more precocious, a more proli fi c winner and rated superior to the likes of Dark Angel and Mehmas who both retired following their juvenile seasons, it looks like the world is his oyster!
