Coolmore Stud, home of Champions. New for 2023 – Dual Gr.1 winning 2YO Blackbeard

BLACKBEARD Dual Group 1-winning 2YO by No Nay Never

The yearling sales this autumn, set against a back- drop of turmoil, once again showed the resilience of the bloodstock industry. In a buoyant market, many of our clients were well rewarded for produc- ing quality stock and in plenty of cases we were more than happy to bid on them. No Nay Never provided many of the year’s high- lights on the racecourse enjoying a fantastic season with his juveniles and looks like he could become a modern-day Danzig. While it was disappointing that his son Blackbeard had to be retired, racing’s loss is the breeding industry’s gain and he looks to have a very bright future ahead of him at stud. Sons of Galileo continue to produce the goods and this year saw Churchill propel himself to the next level with a three-year-old colt and two-year-old filly out of the top drawer. First crop two-year-old sires Saxon Warrior and Sioux Nation have bothmade excellent starts with a host of Group horses to their credit highlighted by the former’s Breeders’ Cup winner Victoria Road. This spring was a particularly exciting one on the farm at Coolmore with the arrival of the first Irish foals by Wootton Bassett in addition to the first crops by Sottsass, Circus Maximus and Arizona. Everyone here couldn’t be happier with what they’ve seen of them to date so it’s a case of onwards and upwards. Finally a big thank you to all our clients for your continued support and to all our staff members who do such a wonderful job.

The Best Clients in theWorld In addition to the impressive broodmare band owned by Coolmore partners John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Westerberg, many of the world’s other leading players, with long histories in the stallion business, choose to board mares at Coolmore. The Niarchos Family

Stavros Niarchos won the Middle Park Stakes with Pipe of Peace in 1956 and after a lengthy hiatus he returned to the business in the 1970s most notably with the brilliant Nureyev who went on to enjoy a sensational stud career initially at his owner’s Haras de Fresney le Buffard in Normany and latterly at Walmac International in Kentucky. Nureyev’s fi nest daughter both on the racecourse and in the paddocks was the mighty Miesque. She produced the outstanding sire Kingmambo and the family has been carefully nurtured over the years by Stavros’s daughter Maria and grand- daughter Electra. Recent Group 1-winning sisters Alpha Centauri, Alpine Star and Discoveries, all born and raised at Coolmore, have Miesque as their third dam. The Niarchos family was honoured with the 2021 Longines and IFHA International award of merit for their lifelong contribution to racing.

Maria and Electra Niarchos with Horse Of The Year Alpha Centauri

Peter Brant, White Birch Farm Peter Brant was the breeder of Michael Tabor’s Kentucky Derby winner Thunder Gulch and also bred and raced both his sire Gulch and dam Line of Thunder. He also owned the brilliant Triptych and was responsible for bringing legendary stallion Mr. Prospector to Claiborne Farm having begun his stud career in Florida. More recently he raced Sottsass and is now supporting him with a large number of top-notch mares. Brant is an accomplished polo player and was at one time the highest-ranked amateur player in the U.S.

The Wertheimer Brothers The Wertheimer family have been breeding champions ever since Epinard was Champion 2-Year-Old in France back in 1922. Another homebred Lavandin won the Epsom Derby in 1956 and the family has been responsible for the development of a number of top stallions including Lyphard, Riverman and Green Dancer. More recent stars to grace the turf in the famous blue and white silks include the triple Breeders’ Cup Mile heroine Goldikova. The Yoshida Family The foundation of the Yoshida empire was laid by their grandfather, Zensuke, who ran a horse in the fi rst Japanese Derby, in 1932. His son, Zenya, added signi fi cantly to the legacy with his bargain-price purchase of the great American champion Sunday Silence in 1990. Zenya, who died in 1993, did not get to see Sunday Silence become the greatest stallion in Japanese history. His sons achieved that by embarking on a two-decade spending spree for the fi nest broodmares to breed to him and then to his sons. Sunday Silence’s son Deep Impact has been Champion Sire in Japan every year since 2012 and is sire of our own Saxon Warrior. More recently, Northern Farm bred Japan’s two 2021 Breeders’ Cup winners - the fi rst in the country’s history. The Sangster Family The Sangster Family’s association with the Magnier family dates back to the early 1970s in the days of Green God and Deep Diver. When Castlehyde joined forces with Coolmore along with Vincent O’Brien and Robert Sangster in 1975, a major assault on the American yearling market was planned. Success was immediate with $200,000 purchase The Minstrel winning the Epsom Derby. In the 1980s, both Sadler’s Wells and Caerleon carried the famous Sangster colours before embarking on their hugely successful stud careers at Coolmore. In the latest season Luxembourg, bred by Ben Sangster, added the Irish Champion Stakes to his juvenile Group 1 success at Doncaster.

FIVE STAR BOARDING The latest season saw Gleneagles’ son Highland Chief, born and raised on the farm, win the Grade 1 Man O’War Stakes at Belmont Park in the colours of his breeder Mrs Fitri Hay. Onesto, bred by American Adam Bowden at Coolmore, won the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris for Fabrice Chappet having being sold as a yearling while his yearling half-sister by Gleneagles sold for €460,000 at Arqana August. Amongst the Group 1 winners bred by the Coolmore partners was Tuesday, winner of the Oaks at Epsom on her June 3rd birthday before fi nishing the season in style at the Breeders’ Cup. Another was one of the season’s best juveniles in the shape of Auguste Rodin.

Mrs Fitri Hay , owner/breeder of Highland Chief with husband Jim

My wife and I had gone over to Ireland as we sponsored theVincent Delaney Memorial Standardbred race, and one of the days we had free, we had a tour of Coolmore. While we were there they told us they had some mares for sale. Eddie Fitzpatrick was fantastic and is my contact there, and we ended up buying a couple of mares from them. If breeders want to make a splash in European racing they could do worse than buy from the best, and in addition to the mares acquired from Coolmore, Bowden later bought Onesto's dam Onshore (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), as an unraced 3-year-old TDN, 19/5/22

Adam Bowden of Diamond Creek Farm is among the most important and respected individuals in the Standardbred breeding business and has now branched into Thoroughbreds with considerable success

MICHAEL Donohoe remembers every detail from the process of buying Irish Oaks and Ribblesdale winner Magical Lagoon…. “Obviously she had the great pedigree,” Donohoe recalled this week. “But when I remember pulling her out of the box and she had a real swag to her. She was a lovely kind filly. I wasn’t worried as to why Coolmore were selling her. My view is that Coolmore have so many Galileos and they have all these brilliant families and they can’t keep everything, like any breeder. It’s just their opinion against the buyer’s opinion. They have a value and it’s up to the potential purchaser to match that.” Zhang is a self-made billionaire from the Shen Xi province in mainland China. He has steadily developed his interest in racing after studying racing jurisdictions around the world, concluding that Australia was the right place to set up a farm and Ireland as a lush source of stock. Edward Teach (c. 1680–1718), better known as Blackbeard, was an English pirate who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of Britain's North American colonies. He captured a French slave ship known as La Concorde, renamed her Queen Anne's Revenge, equipped her with 40 guns, and crewed her with over 300 men. Known for his fearsome image and daring acts on land and sea, Teach was romanticised after his death and became the inspiration for the archetypal pirate in works of fi ction across many genres. Our own Blackbeard has done his fair share of plundering around Europe in his juvenile year winning no less than six races in three countries. Better bred, more precocious, a more proli fi c winner and rated superior to the likes of Dark Angel and Mehmas who both retired following their juvenile seasons, it looks like the world is his oyster!

From our research, the most important quality in a stallion prospect is consistent high-class performance. Eight out of every ten of the leading stallions place in at least 75% of their starts. Another of our fi ndings is that high-class colts out of very good racemares have a brilliant record of sire success. A colt that ran consistently at the top level and is out of a well performed mare - that’s what to look for in a stallion prospect. Bill Oppenheim “ “
