The best of everything

Coolmore is located in the heart of the Golden Vale on some of the best quality limestone grazing land in Ireland. Those who board their horses here know that they will thrive on the rich pasture. They also know that Coolmore has invested in an infrastructure that is second to none. This coupled with an experienced and dedicated workforce ensures that the finest service imaginable is provided to each and every horse on the farm.

Put simply, we care for your horses just like our own.

Amongst the many 2018 Gr.1 winners who were foaled or spent their formative months at Coolmore are 4-time Gr.1 winner Alpha Centauri bred by the Niarchos Family and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Line Of Duty bred by Triermore Stud.

Other major players who board mares at Coolmore include...

l The Wertheimer Brothers l Philippa Cooper l Gestut Ammerland l Joseph Allen l The Gunther Family of Glennwood Farm

l Merriebelle Stables l Zayat Stables l Robert Ng l Mary Slack l George Strawbridge l Mr Juergen Imm l Sir Robert Ogden l Lester Piggott l Helen Alexander l Dayton Breeding l Aston House Stud

l White Birch Farm l Swettenham Stud l Gaynor Rupert l Daylesford Stud l Mrs Fitri Hay

Foaling Coolmore has six specialised foaling units where your mare and her newborn will receive the very best of care. Some of the world’s best breeders entrust us with foaling their mares and some of this year’s Gr.1 winning graduates include Alpha Centauri (Niarchos Family), Ten Sovereigns (Camas Park & Summerhill Studs), Poet’s Word (Woodcote Stud), Kew Gardens and Flag Of Honour (Barronstown Stud), Latrobe (Sweetmans Bloodstock). The foaling units generally operate from January to the end of May. Mares ideally arrive one month before their due date after which they are monitored around the clock by our foaling staff. l 24-hour supervision by highly experienced foaling staff, skilled in post and ante-natal care. l Individual nursery paddocks. l On-site veterinary hospital with neo-natal intensive care unit. l All Coolmore foaling units are within close proximity of the world class Fethard Equine Hospital. l Complete fostering service should the need arise. l Colostrum bank with high quality colostrum if required. l Regular reports and photos to keep you updated on the progress of your stock.

Foster Mares Coolmore keeps a band of specially selected foster mares in case a mare is unable to rear her own foal through illness, injury or death. The foster mares are chosen for their excellent temperament. Plenty of top-class horses have benefited from a Coolmore foster mare including dual Gr.1 winning miler The Gurkha who instantly bonded with his newmum “Tina” at two days old and 2018 Breeders’ Cup winner Line Of Duty. The foster mares’ own foals are hand-reared until old enough to be weaned onto bucket feeding. They quickly settle and thrive in their new routine, bonding with other foals of a similar age. Most of the foster foals are re-homed as due to their placid nature they make wonderful mounts for both children and adults and many go on to excel in a variety of disciplines. A number will also remain at Coolmore, the fillies eventually becoming foster mares themselves while the colts make excellent teaser stallions.

Former Coolmore foster foal “Muncher” is the huntman’s horse for a Co Cork based hunt and is pictured leading the pack.

Breaking Every autumn yearlings raised on the farm and purchased at the sales are broken. Time, patience and experience are the vital ingredients required and at Coolmore we are fortunate to have some of the finest horsemen in the world. They are joined by a team of highly experienced riders from Ballydoyle when the time comes for the yearlings to be backed and ridden. The breaking process typically lasts between six and eight weeks, and everything is geared towards giving the horse a gentle and enjoyable introduction to what will become his new way of life. A horse’s experience while being broken will play an important part in shaping its attitude towards being ridden, and by extension towards racing.

Fethard Equine Hospital Fethard Equine hospital, situated adjacent to Coolmore, is one of the most modern and advanced equine hospitals in the world. The state-of-the-art facilities include three surgical suites, an intensive care facility featuring a neonatal critical care unit, as well as an advanced diagnostic imaging facility. Short keyhole joint surgery, standing fracture repair, mare reproductive and colic surgery are routine procedures undertaken here. Diagnostic tools include Digital X-ray, Endoscopy, Ultrasound examination and Arthroscopy in addition to a fully equipped diagnostic laboratory. The practice is also at the forefront of 3D imaging with the very latest in diagnostic CT technology. Four Board Certified Equine Surgeons, along with a Board Certified Internal Medicine Specialist are presently working in the hospital, assisted by six interns, six veterinary nurses, barn and administrative staff. There is 24-hour cover provided at the hospital with several vets and a nurse living on site to ensure the highest standard of veterinary care.

The CT scanner, which is the only one of its kind in the country, is capable of capturing high resolution 3D images while the horse is standing.

The Harvest Oats form part of the balanced diet for our horses, and to ensure the highest quality possible we grow our own. The oat crop is harvested at the peak of its ripeness, usually in late July. Some of the machinery we use to harvest is built to our own specifications as is the purpose-built store the crop is gathered into. Winter barley straw provides the best bedding being more absorbent and less palatable than other varieties. To this end a significant crop of winter barley is planted and harvested every year. It is meticulously checked for quality at every stage from planting to storage. It’s that detail thing, and the fact that at Coolmore, there is no such thing as a minor one. The oats must pass through a rigorous quality assurance programme at the purpose-built oat store and are regularly inspected and tested by expert consultants to ensure a final product of the highest quality

18

19

Cattle Cattle form an important part of our grassland

management plan. Horses are notoriously selective grazers, and cattle will graze areas within paddocks that have been ignored by the horses, thereby ensuring an even crop of rich pasture throughout each and every paddock. This grass will have a high nutritional content which will massively benefit the young horses raised at Coolmore. From the month of October onwards, when grass growth slows and the land can become wet and prone to damage, the cattle are moved in-doors. The following spring, as the evenings begin to lengthen and the days become warmer, the cattle are let out to pasture in small groups. This is a sure sign that summer is on its way.

20

21

Composting Compost is very important as a natural fertiliser on the land and it is also a way of using the large volumes of stable manure accumulated over the year. Stables are mucked out daily and the dirty straw is then used to bed down our cattle which are housed indoors during the winter months. The straw will naturally compost and decompose underneath the cattle, it will then be stored until it can be spread on the land the following autumn. The composted material gives the soil a good humus and its naturally high phosphorus and potash content enriches the land and reduces the need for synthetic fertilisers. In the spring cattle are let out to pasture and a system has been developed to manage stable manure during the summer months. Dirty straw is stockpiled on a large custommade covered concrete apron where cattle slurry is added. A purpose built machine then turns the straw, agitating it and adding air, which when mixed with moisture will speed up the decomposition process. Any run-off material is collected and stored in an adjacent tank. This liquid has a high nutrient content and is spread on the large willow plantation that surrounds the area. Willow trees are well known for their ability to absorb nutrients and therefore they have a natural cleansing effect on the run-off water. These nutrients also provide a feed source for the willows and help them to grow and thrive. The willows are felled and harvested on a rotational basis and the dried wood is cut into pellets which are used as fuel for the woodchip boilers that heat the many staff homes dotted throughout the farm. This reduces dependency on oil and other fossil fuels thereby helping to improve the farm’s carbon footprint.
