During a sadly abbreviated stallion career, Scat Daddy was responsible for no fewer than 11 2YO Group winners in Europe, in the form of No Nay Never, Caravaggio, Lady Aurelia, Sioux Nation, Acapulco, Seahenge, Skitter Scatter, Van Beethoven, So Perfect, Sergei Prokofiev and Daddy Long Legs. Several of these shone at Royal Ascot, where No Nay Never won the Gr.2 Norfolk Stakes. Six years later No Nay Never’s son Arizona landed the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes, having previously won a Curragh maiden by 8 lengths. He later finished second to Champion 2YO Pinatubo in the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes. Arizona’s full-sister Nay Lady Nay is also very smart, winning the Gr.2 Mrs Revere S. at three and the Gr.3 Matchmaker S. at four. Their second dam Bright Generation won the Gr.1 Oaks d’Italia, was runner-up in the Gr.1 Moyglare Stud S. as a juvenile and is also the 2nd dam of the European Champion 2YO Dabirsim (sire of Different League and Coeur de Beaute, both Group winners and Gr.1 placed from his first crop). With his first two dams being daughters of the Champion American turf horse English Channel and the Arc winner Rainbow Quest, Arizona has a pedigree free of the most successful European stallions, such as Danehill, Green Desert, Sadler’s Wells and Galileo, as well as Sharpen Up. No Nay Never owes much of his early success to DANZIG line mares. His 2020 Gr.1 winner Alcohol Free is out of a grand-daughter of Danzig, by HARD SPUN , and he is working very well with mares by sons of DANEHILL . They include EXCEED AND EXCEL (broodmare sire of dual Gr.1 winner Ten Sovereigns), ROCK OF GIBRALTAR (Gr.2 12

scorer Land Force), ORATORIO (SW Servalan), FASTNET ROCK (Gr.2-placed Neverland Rock, plus Australian Gr.2 winner Need I Say More) and DANEHILL DANCER (Gr.1-placed The Irish Rover and Gr.3-placed We Go). Mares by KODIAC , CAMACHO , CLODOVIL , DANETIME and HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR should reinforce Arizona’s 2YO ability. Mares by the likes of CHOISIR , MASTERCRAFTSMAN , ZOFFANY and BATED BREATH should also suit. The GREEN DESERT branch of the DANZIG line also has plenty to offer, as No Nay Never has a 7f Gr.3 winner out of a SEA THE STARS mare, as well as Listed winners out of daughters of CAPE CROSS and OASIS DREAM (2). OASIS DREAM is also the broodmare sire of Sioux Nation, a Gr.1-winning 2YO by Scat Daddy. Mares by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT , LAWMAN , DESERT STYLE and KHELEYF are other likeable options. Fast horses from the NUREYEV will suit, such as daughters of PIVOTAL , EXCELLENT ART , CAPTAIN RIO and KYLLACHY . SIYOUNI , with his dam by DANEHILL , could be especially suitable. No Nay Never’s SW All The King’s Men has a dam by PEINTRE CELEBRE and Gr.1 winner Ten Sovereigns has a second dam by THEATRICAL . Although Arizona is inbred 4x5x4 to MR PROSPECTOR , this outstanding American stallion will be no closer than the fifth generation of Arizona’s offspring. No Nay Never is thriving with mares with MR PROSPECTOR blood. STORM CAT is another who will be well back in Arizona’s foals. Scat Daddy’s Gr.1 winners Lady Aurelia and Harmonize were inbred 4x3 and 4x4 respectively to STORM CAT , therefore Arizona should be well suited to mares by the likes of FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND , SHAMARDAL and LOPE DE VEGA . The SADLER’S WELLS line has also had success with No Nay Never. His Gr.2-winning 2YO Shadn has a dam by SADLER’S WELLS and he has two 2YO Listed winners among his first 7 starters out of GALILEO mares. Sadler’s Wells’ full-brother FAIRY KING sired the second dam of Gr.1 winner Alcohol Free. Daughters of MONTJEU and HIGH CHAPARRAL are others to strongly consider. The SHIRLEY HEIGHTS male line has quickly made its mark with No Nay Never, with his classic-placed Gr.2-winning son Wichita having a dam by DASHING BLADE . Mares from the quick-maturing ROYAL APPLAUSE line should help Arizona pass on his juvenile ability. Daughters of ACCLAMATION , DARK ANGEL and EQUIANO would suit. No Nay Never has a Gr.3 winner out of an INDIAN RIDGE mare and his Group winners Wichita, Land Force and Love Locket all have second dams by INDIAN RIDGE so this looks like a very favourable route. BLUSHING GROOM ’s sons RAINBOW QUEST , NASHWAN and RAHY collectively sired the second dams of four of No Nay Never’s black-type winners, so more BLUSHING GROOM should definitely work with Arizona.

NO NAY NEVER , 21 SWs in his first 2 crops. Already sire of Gr.1-winning 2YOs TEN SOVEREIGNS & ALCOHOL FREE .

SCAT DADDY , Champion 2YO sire. His best progeny include JUSTIFY , CARAVAGGIO , ACAPULCO , SIOUX NATION , LADY AURELIA etc.

His second crop is proving similarly effective, with seven SWs already including Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Order of Australia, classic winner Galileo Chrome and the Irish Oaks second Cayenne Pepper. Three of Australia’s Group winners - Gr.2 2YO winner Beyond Reason, Buckhurst and Patrick Sarsfield - are respectively inbred 4x3, 4x2 and 4x4 to GREEN DESERT . This suggests that Australia will shine with mares by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT and OASIS DREAM or their sons. Daughters of GREEN DESERT have produced 14% Group winners to Galileo. Three sons of Galileo - Teofilo, Intello and New Approach - have already sired Gr.1 winners from grand-daughters of GREEN DESERT . OASIS DREAM mares have Group winners by Galileo and three of his sons. 16

Several of Australia’s Group winners have a second line of DANZIG . His Gr.1-winning miler Order of Australia has a dam by DANEHILL and numerous sons of DANEHILL are playing a significant role too. His first classic winner, Galileo Chrome, has a dam by DANSILI , and so do Listed winner King Carney and the Gr.1-placed 2yo Oodnadatta. His Gr.3 winner Epona Plays has a dam by ORATORIO and Australia is also making his mark with mares by DANEHILL DANCER siring classic-placed Sir Ron Priestly and Gr.2 winner Leo de Fury. Galileo has 12 Group/Graded winners from 66 foals out of daughters of STORM CAT (21 per cent) and has classic winner Seventh Heaven from a mare by JOHANNESBURG . Teofilo, another son of Galileo, sired a Gr.1 winner from a daughter of GIANT’S CAUSEWAY . Frankel has Gr.1 and Gr.2 winners out of grand-daughters of STORM CAT . Nathaniel, Galileo’s son, sired the brilliant Enable from a SADLER’S WELLS mare. Frankel and Teofilo both have Gr.1 winners from daughters of MONTJEU , this being 3x3 to SADLER’S WELLS . Oaks winner Anapurna is one of four Group winners by Frankel with SADLER’S WELLS inbreeding. New Approach has a 2YO Gr.1 winner inbred 2x3 to GALILEO . Australia already has two Group winners with second dams by NUREYEV . Galileo has 11 Group winners from 39 foals out of PIVOTAL mares (28 per cent). Frankel is also shaping up well with PIVOTAL mares, notably siring Gr.1 winners Cracksman and Veracious. Australia should be a natural for the MILL REEF line, and his first classic winner, Galileo Chrome, has a second dam by DARSHAAN . Thanks to his smart son Bangkok, Australia is one of three sons of Galileo to have sired a Group winner from DARSHAAN mares and he has also sired the Gr.2-placed Listed winner Mohican Heights from a SHIRLEY HEIGHTS mare. Galileo has sired Gr.1 winners from three generations of descendants from Mill Reef. MARK OF ESTEEM daughters are shining with Galileo’s sons, producing the likes of Permian, Ostilio, Ajman Princess and the Hong Kong star Exultant. A DAYLAMI mare produced the classic-winning Logician to Frankel. Galileo is excelling with the ROBERTO line, notably siring Nathaniel, Great Heavens and Seville from daughters of SILVER HAWK . His partnership with INTIKHAB has been tremendously effective, with five Group winners from 11 foals, including Arc winner Found. Galileo sired the Gr.1 winner Galikova from a BLUSHING GROOM mare and RAINBOW QUEST sired the second dams of Frankel, Noble Mission and Curvy. Australia is one of three sons of Galileo to have sired a SW from daughters of RAINBOW QUEST . Frankel and Teofilo have both sired Gr.2 winners from daughters of RAHY , and Teofilo’s 2020 Gr.1 winner Donjah has a dam by MT LIVERMORE . Australia has already sired the classic-placed Cayenne Pepper from a MR PROSPECTOR line mare, by GONE WEST’s son ELUSIVE QUALITY . Galileo has numerous Gr.1 winners inbred to MR PROSPECTOR within four generations. Four sons of Galileo have Group winners out of DUBAWI mares. AUSTRALIA is likely to benefit from mares with AHONOORA blood. He has made an impressive start with mares by ACCLAMATION , which create 5x4 to AHONOORA . From 6 foals he has sired the very smart Broome and a Listed-placed filly, and a 2019 brother to Broome sold for 575,000gns. Australia’s Gr.1-placed son Sydney Opera House has a second dam by AHONOORA , so is inbred 5x3. Galileo’s classic winner New Approach has a dam by this top sprinter. Both Galileo and Frankel have Gr.1 winners from INCHINOR mares. The SHARPEN UP line is another guaranteed to suit Australia, as it has produced a classic winner to his sire Galileo and has enjoyed plenty of success with several other sons of Sadler’s Wells.

A highly impressive 5-length debut winner at Newmarket on June 9, Calyx reappeared ten days later as one of 23 runners in the Gr.2 Coventry S. Despite having to race on the slower part of the course from his high draw, he burst well clear of his group and won well. The next four across the line, which all raced in the other group, included the future Group winners Advertise (3xGr.1), Sergei Prokofiev and Shine So Bright. Calyx was similarly impressive on his return to action at three in the Gr.3 Commonwealth Cup Trial where, once again, 20

he displayed an explosive turn of foot. The Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup appeared to be at Calyx’s mercy but he suffered a pastern injury when second to Hello Youmzain in the Gr.2 Sandy Lane S. and his career was over. Calyx and his parents, Kingman and Helleborine, collectively won seven of their eight juvenile starts, the only defeat coming when Helleborine was beaten by the future Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Misty For Me in the Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac. Helleborine had previously won the Gr.3 Prix d’Aumale by five lengths from the future Gr.1 winner Immortal Verse. Helleborine’s older sister African Rose won the Gr.1 Sprint Cup and went on to produce the fast and precocious Frankel filly Fair Eva, winner of the Gr.3 Princess Margaret S. Calyx’s pedigree is free of Sadler’s Wells, Galileo and Danehill. Kingman is already showing promise with daughters of GALILEO , siring a Gr.3 winner and a Listed winner in his first crop, and Calyx’s family has produced a smart 2YO to FRANKEL . Calyx could be a useful means of injecting more precocity into mares by TEOFILO , NEW APPROACH and AUSTRALIA . Kingman’s Gr.2-placed American performers Jazzique and Public Sector are out of daughters of SADLER’S WELLS and MONTJEU . SADLER’S WELLS mares are the second dams of Kingman’s smart sons Headman and Roseman. SINGSPIEL is broodmare sire of Kingman’s Gr.3 2YO winner Boomer. PIVOTAL mares are likely to be ideal for Calyx. Kingman has already sired the speedy Poetry and the smart Roseman from daughters of PIVOTAL , which have enjoyed Gr.1 success with Calyx’s grandsire Invincible Spirit and with another of Invincible Spirit’s sons. GREEN DESERT will be back in the fourth generation of Calyx’s progeny. Kingman’s record suggests that Calyx could shine with a second line, as Kingman’s Gr.2 winner Fearless King and Gr.3 winner Chachnak are inbred 3x4, with their second line coming through daughters of GREEN DESERT . Also Kingman’s speedy Group-placed Listed winner Alligator Alley is out of a CAPE CROSS mare and Listed winner Raakib Alhawa has a dam by SEA THE STARS . They are therefore inbred 3x3 and 3x4 to GREEN DESERT . The DANEHILL branch is also making its mark with Kingman. His versatile classic-winning son Persian King has a dam by DYLAN THOMAS , his Gr.3 winners Cormorant and Chachnak are respectively out of mares by DANSILI and DANEHILL DANCER . The smart Sangarius has a second dam by DANEHILL . Calyx can be expected to do well with mares by Danehill’s stallion sons, such as DANSILI , DANEHILL DANCER , EXCEED AND EXCEL , FASTNET ROCK , ROCK OF GIBRALTAR , HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR , DANETIME , CAMACHO and CLODOVIL . Daughters of KODIAC produce 4x3 to that influential mare Rafha. Kingman’s Gr.3-winning son Sinawann has a dam by ANABAA . Kingman already has Group-placed performers out of mares by ROYAL APPLAUSE and his son ACCLAMATION . This line is well qualified to help Calyx sire Royal Ascot 2YOs. There is no obstacle to adding more of the MR PROSPECTOR blood which has done so well with Calyx’s grandsire Invincible Spirit. Kingman’s top-class miler Palace Pier has a dam by NAYEF . Kingman has a Listed winner from a KINGMAMBO mare, a Gr.2 winner from a KING’S BEST mare, a Listed-winning filly out of a LEMON DROP KID mare and a Gr.2-placed winner out of an ARCHIPENKO mare. Calyx should suit these KINGMAMBO line mares. Invincible Spirit has 13% SWs, including four Group winners, out of MACHIAVELLIAN mares and Kingman has talented performers out of mares by Machiavellian’s sons STREET CRY and MEDICEAN . Calyx would be interesting with daughters of successful stallions with dams by MACHIAVELLIAN , especially as ZOFFANY , DARK ANGEL and SHAMARDAL will reinforce Calyx’s remarkable juvenile ability. LOPE DE VEGA is inbred 3x3 to MACHIAVELLIAN . Kingman has a Gr.3 winner and a Listed winner out of mares by different sons of STORM CAT , including GIANT’S CAUSEWAY , who also sired the second dam of Kingman’s classic-winning son Persian King. This again suggests daughters of SHAMARDAL and FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND . Kingman has numerous SWs with two lines of Mill Reef, including two out of mares by DARSHAAN .

Calyx’s owner/breeder Prince Khalid Abdullah of Juddmonte Farms who sent 5 mares to him in 2020, and are all in foal. 21
