Breaking Under the experienced eye of Evan Henley, every autumn yearlings raised on the farm and purchased at the sales are broken. Time, patience and experience are the vital ingredients required and at Coolmore we are fortunate to have some very fine horsemen and horsewomen. The breaking process typically lasts between six and eight weeks, where everything is geared towards giving the horse a gentle and enjoyable introduction to what will become his or her new way of life.

Horses broken in at Coolmore in recent seasons include Group 1 winners HOME AFFAIRS , SHINZO , LINDERMANN , FANGIRL and PERSONAL , top 2-year-old LEARNING TO FLY , unbeaten Stakes winner ACROBAT etc.

Agriculture and Agronomy Our award-winning herd of Angus cattle play an integral role in the pasture management at Coolmore. Horses are notoriously selective grazers and cattle will clean up areas within paddocks that have been ignored by horses thereby ensuring an even crop of rich pasture throughout each and every paddock.

11

The team A great many people play their own part in making Coolmore the success that it has become. Whether it’s around the farm, in the o ff ice or at the sales, it’s all about doing things to the highest possible standard. Our skilled and dedicated sta ff are integral to the ongoing success of Coolmore and we could not achieve our goals without them. Th anks to one and all!

While Australia can now lay claim to producing many of the world’s finest wines, they’ve been doing it a little longer in the south-west of France. Bordeaux wine production is said to have begun sometime a ft er 43 AD, during the Roman occupation of Gaul, when the Romans established vineyards to cultivate wine for the soldiers. In time, Bordeaux became the undisputed wine capital of the world and home to many of France’s most beautiful châteaux. Our own Best Of Bordeaux announced himself on debut with a vintage performance in the Canonbury Stakes-Gr.3 at Rosehill. A month later in the Silver Slipper-Gr.2 he again displayed his brilliant speed to remain unbeaten. In the Golden Slipper-Gr.1 he was best of the colts running a gallant second to star filly Fireburn. And like many fine wines, Best Of Bordeaux improved with age adding the Roman Consul Stakes-Gr.2 as a three-year-old. Timeform’s highest rated two-year-old colt of his generation, he was a natural, front-running speed horse just like his sire Snitzel with whom he shares an uncanny resemblance. Pedigree, race performance and looks to match!

And, interestingly, there’s a couple of old staff of Gerald’s who’ve been there for many years and looked after Snitzel; they were doing double takes in the stable and getting selfies with the horse because they said it was the nearest thing they had seen to Snitzel as a 2-year-old.

you mix that with Snitzel, one of the best two or three stallions in the country, it certainly makes him an exciting prospect. We got an insight into Snitzel from Mr Snitzel himself… Best Of Bordeaux was stabled with Gerald Ryan during his autumn campaign. Gerald said to Kacy on a number of occasions, ‘This horse is just a spitting image of Snitzel ’.

‘Australia’s champion first-season sire-in-waiting’ ….the victory of Legacies, a Rosemont Stud-homebred daughter of Justify (Scat Daddy), in the Anzac Day Stakes (Listed, 1400m) added to the considerable Australian fi rst season record of the US Triple Crown winner, who returns to Coolmore Australia in 2023 having taken a spell from shuttling in 2022. It cements Justify’s position as Australia’s champion fi rst-season sire-in-waiting, quite remarkable given he didn’t debut until he was three. Should he claim that title, he would become the fi rst shuttle sire to claim freshman hours in Australia since More Than Ready (Southern Halo), who was also American bred, in 2004/5. ANZ , 01/05/23

Starspangledbanner can step in to fi ll the Deep Field gap The news from Coolmore last week that Starspangledbanner is to shuttle from Coolmore in Ireland to its Australian farm in the Hunter Valley for the next Southern Hemisphere season has been met with an ‘extraordinary’ response from ‘local breeders’ eager to pair him with their mares, but the announcement has also gone down well in Hong Kong.

“I’m de fi nitely pleased to see him coming back,” said Hong Kong’s former champion trainer John Moore, who nowadays buys horses with his son, George Moore, under the George Moore Bloodstock banner. The Australian has had success previously with Starspangledbanner’s offspring and he is hoping for more yet. ASIAN RACING REPORT.com

IN THE PIPELINE

When Coolmore purchased Wootton Bassett in the summer of 2020 he had just one Group 1 winner to his credit, albeit a very special one in European Champion 3-Year-Old Almanzor (from his sire’s first crop of just 23 foals). In the intervening period that tally has risen to six, courtesy of Prix Jean Romanet and Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare heroine Audarya , Prix Saint-Alary winner Incarville , 1000m Prix de l’Abbaye winner Wooded , and Group 1- winning juveniles Zellie and Al Ri ff a . And remember, these were conceived at fees as low as €4,000. But the really exciting part is what comes next. In his first seasons at Coolmore Ireland and Coolmore Australia he was visited by the crème de la crème of broodmares. Turn the page to view some of the outstanding weanlings from his first Southern Hemisphere crop.

AL RIFFA , winner of the National Stakes-Gr.1 at 2 years in 2022 for Joseph O’Brien and Jassim Bin Ali Al Attiyah on just his third start took this step up in class in his stride

New for 2024

This year’s impressive Golden Slipper winner got his name from the late Abe Shinzo , the longest-serving prime minister in Japan’s postwar history. One of Abe’s many legacies will be the Ahmedabad-Mumbai high-speed bullet train project with an expected top speed for the corridor of 350km/h. Our own Shinzo - bred, raised and broken in here at Coolmore - is pretty rapid too which he showed when giving Chris Waller his first winner of the Rosehill showpiece. Blink and you’ll miss him!

The Magnier family have been in the stallion business for five generations, ever since Tom’s great grandfather and namesake Thomas Magnier began o ff ering the services of his stallion Edlington to the breeders of the Blackwater Valley in the 1850’s. In the early 1970’s Tom’s father John and maternal grandfather Vincent O’Brien joined forces with Robert Sangster and were ultimately to revolutionise the stallion business. Together they pioneered the shuttle concept which has played such a major role in rapidly improving the Australian breed to the world-class level of today.

A great opportunity Speaking of his visit to Ballydoyle, famed trainer Michael Dickinson said: “If I had seen the Pyramids, Niagara Falls and the Great Wall of China in the same day it would not have created more of an impression.” Following the phenomenal success enjoyed there by Tom Magnier’s grandfather Dr Vincent O’Brien and his unrelated namesake Aidan O’Brien, the place has become a legend in its own right. What is less known about Ballydoyle however is the growing list of graduates who have gone on to top level success having been sold to new connections. These include two Cox Plate winners, two winners of The Metropolitan, two Sydney Cup heros along with winners of the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Stakes, Underwood Stakes and Tancred Stakes. Maybe it’s time you gave us a call.
