The Coolmore tradition began in the 1850s with Thomas Magnier offering the services of his stallions to local breeders along the Blackwater Valley in Co. Cork. One of those stallions was the renowned Edlington whose fee was the not inconsiderable sum of £3-0s-0d. Coolmore Stud is acknowledged to be the world’s pre-eminent thoroughbred racehorse breeding operation. It’s situated in the heart of the Golden Vale on some of Ireland’s finest limestone land. John Magnier in conjunction with his father-in-law, the outstanding trainer Vincent O’Brien, and Robert Sangster, purchased the then 350 acre farm from Battle of Britain flying ace TimVigors with the objective of creating a world-class stallion operation. One of the first stallions to stand at Coolmore, Be My Guest , became Champion sire in GB/IRE in 1982. Caerleon then topped the table in 1988 and 1991. In 2004 Sadler’s Wells was

Champion sire for the 14th time, smashing Highflyer’s record which was set in 1798. Danehill then took up the baton with 3 titles from 2005 to 2007. Galileo is now the world’s best stallion and his reign since 2008 was broken only once, by his stud companion Danehill Dancer in 2009. In fact Coolmore stallions have been Champion sires in GB/IRE every year since 1990 while Galileo and Danehill are the world’s most successful sires of Gr.1 winners. Other top sires to have stood at Coolmore include Fairy King , Alzao , Night Shift , Last Tycoon , Royal Academy , Montjeu and High Chaparral . Wootton Bassett , Camelot , No Nay Never , Australia and Mastercraftsman are just some of the other current Gr.1 sires. Our roster of sire prospects has never been stronger with the likes of Calyx , Circus Maximus , Magna Grecia , Saxon Warrior , Sioux Nation , Sottsass , Ten Sovereigns and U S Navy Flag all yet to have runners.
