Coolmore Australia Brochure 2019

A U S T R A L I A New for 2019

J U S T I F Y

I would like to thank all our clients and friends for their continued support over the last 12 months. Your success on the track and in the sales ring gives us great satisfaction. In 2019 we offer the finest line-up of stallions ever assembled at Coolmore Australia with an outstanding mix of proven sires, the best young colonial sire prospects and a select group of international superstars. It is an honour to stand two US Triple Crown winners in the Hunter Valley. Justify, the only Triple Crown winner ever to retire unbeaten, will stand alongside American Pharoah, who has already enjoyed an excellent start with his first two-year-olds in Europe and America. We are also delighted to offer the unbeaten Group 1 winning two-year-old and Guineas winning three-year-old Saxon Warrior and the incredibly exciting Mendelssohn, who has everything we look for in a stallion prospect. Once again, Fastnet Rock has enjoyed tremendous success both in the sales ring and on the track this season. He is undoubtedly one of the most influential sires in recent times and in his son Merchant Navy we believe we have his heir apparent. He covered an outstanding book of mares in his first season and was supported by some of Australasia’s best breeders, giving him every chance of sire success. We very much look forward to seeing his first foals this spring. Given the dominance of Danehill and his sons over the last two decades in Australia, it is extremely satisfying to have two proven outcross options in Pierro and So You Think who have already worked incredibly well with Danehill-line mares in Australia. In order to offer

breeders more high-quality outcross options we will stand three of the best sons of the late, great Scat Daddy at Coolmore Australia in 2019. Standing alongside the aforementioned Justify and Mendelssohn will be one of the most exciting young sires in the world in No Nay Never. The record-breaking achievements of the incredible Winx have been a source of great pride for the farm over the past four years. She has given so much joy to her owners and the Australian public and we are delighted to have been a part of her story which will live on forever. She is one of 12 Gr.1 winning graduates of Coolmore since the start of 2017, alongside the likes of Angel Of Truth, Oohood, Unforgotten, Comin’ Through and Avantage. This continued success is as a direct result of the quality of our pastures here in Jerrys Plains, as well as our dedicated and experienced staff who ensure that all horses are given the best possible care. As we look towards the 2019 breeding season, on behalf of the whole team I wish you all continued success with your racing and breeding and hope that we can assist in these endeavours.

Baffert believes Justify, Pharoah will thrive in Australia

Bill Finley , 16th April 2019

...Baffert said that both Justify and American Pharoah have all the tools to become top stallions. And, though neither one ran on the grass, he believes their offspring will handle that surface without any problems. Baffert describes Justify as the type of horse you rarely see, in that he was absolutely the perfect horse, that there was not one box that was not checked off. “With Justify, his body, the way he was built, if he were a body builder, he would have been Mr. Universe,” the

Hall of Fame trainer said. “He could do it all. Justify, it’s very rare to see a horse like him. He was perfect.” His jockey, Mike Smith, concurs: “He certainly has the pedigree to be a great stallion,” Smith said. “He had everything it takes that you want to see in a horse that’s going to be a stallion. He was naturally quick with a very high cruising speed. Has a lot of stamina. Has the looks to go along with it, not to mention the athleticism and balance that he had “ When a U.S. campaigned dirt horse

goes over to Australia as a shuttle sire, there’s always the question of whether or not their progeny will take to the turf. With Justify, that probably won’t be a problem because his sire, Scat Daddy, is renowned for his ability to produce top turf horses. Baffert said when he first looked at Justify’s pedigree he thought he had a turf sprinter on his hands. He was not a sprinter and he was untested on the turf, but Baffert believes he would have thrived on that surface. He could not take him to Royal Ascot because the races there conflicted with the

2

American Triple Crown, but he wishes he had had the chance. “I would have loved to take him over there for the race they have for 3-year- olds, (the G1 St. James’s Palace Stakes),” Baffert said. “He would have smoked them. When they’re that great they can run on anything. When he gets to Australia and they look at him they are going to go ‘wow’. He’s always had the wow factor.” While both great horses, American Pharoah and Justify were not the same physically, Baffert said. “They’re actually two different types of horses,” he said. “Pharoah was more of a leaner horse. He could get over the ground. Justify was a big strong heavy horse. He weighed 1,300 pounds. But both had the trait where there was

mechanics, he just glided over the track. You watch him breeze, his mechanics were beautiful. He would just skip over the ground and that tells me he could have run on the grass.” The results will be in on American Pharoah first as his horses bred in the Northern Hemisphere are now 2-year- olds and he’s already had his first winner. Monarch of Egypt (USA) won on April 13 at Naas in Ireland for the co- owners Coolmore and Peter Brant. The race was, of course, on the turf. From what U.S. horsemen have seen so far from American Pharoah’s first crop, most think he has all the attributes to be exceptional stallion. The consensus is that, as 2-year-olds, they will come out relatively early but will reach their peak in the Autumn of their juvenile season.

When he gets to Australia and they look at him they are going to go ‘wow’. He’s always had the wow factor. - Bob Baffert

something dominant about them. If another horse tried to run with them they would just shake them off.” American Pharoah may not have as much grass in his pedigree as Justify does, but Baffert doesn’t see that as a problem. “I think Pharoah could have been a grass horse too,” he said. “His

‘Destined for stardom as a sire’ “Rated head of the World Thoroughbred Rankings in 2015, American Pharoah (USA) is destined for stardom as a sire… How good was American Pharoah ? I suggest he is one of the greatest performers since champions Native Dancer, Swaps, Seattle Slew and Secretariat, and we are indeed lucky he was made available to horse breeders in this country. America’s Triple Crown winner is a handsome bay horse standing just over 16.1 hands. With sound conformation and clean airflow, American Pharoah is likely to have a large heart, seeing he is quite deep in his girth. His first yearlings, sold at auction in North America, were outstanding types” Pedigree Analysis by Ken McLean, , April 2019

MONARCH OF EGYPT was an impressive three-length winner on debut at Naas over 1000m for Aidan O’Brien and is now favourite for the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot

“He’s a lovely straightforward, honest horse who has lots of speed and had been showing us plenty on the gallops at home. We’ll probably give him one more run before Royal Ascot." Aidan O’Brien

“He’s had outstanding works over the Polytrack at Turfway which translates to turf. We’ll run him in the [G2, 1000m] Norfolk at Royal Ascot [June 20] and, hopefully, we can put American Pharoah on the big scale as a sire.” Wesley Ward , TDN, 20 April 2019

Mark Bird, Irish Turf Club Handicapper and delegate at the European two-year-old meeting, said: “… the progressive nature of his form allied to his obvious physical scope and impressive pedigree give rise to hope that his early career may be just the launch pad to greater success as a three-year-old. It’s been more than three years since Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) died, unexpectedly and at the far-too-young age of 11, in December of 2015, but, as we were reminded only this weekend, he continues to be greatly missed. That will likely be the story for a long, long time. Never mind his accomplishments on the racetrack, where he was a G1SW at two and three — Scat Daddy’s most memorable efforts came in his short time in the breeding shed, where he’s responsible for 116 stakes winners from 1,158 registered foals in eight crops (some of which were dual hemisphere). That translates to one in every 10 Scat Daddy foals becoming a black-type stakes winner, and as I noted on Twitter in February when his ratio of stakes winners to foals was at 9.585%, to achieve 10% is a remarkable achievement in modern-day breeding. On April 27th, the opening card of the meet at Churchill Downs, Scat Daddy’s daughter Jo Jo Air became his 116th stakes winner, officially moving him above the 10% mark. She’s his 10th SW from his final crop, and, if he stays true to his one-in-10 ratio, there should be six or seven more SWs to come from these last 3yos, which were conceived at the highest stud fee at which he ever stood: $35,000. (His undefeated Triple Crown winner Justify was bred from Top Daddy

an advertised fee of $30,000). Before his death, the Coolmore stallion was set to cover mares at a $100,000 fee in 2016, and the mind boggles thinking about what he could have achieved with the higher caliber mares synonymous with a six-figure stud breeding fee. Fortunately, with a (likely-to-increase) number of Graded/Group-winning sons left behind, Scat Daddy’s legacy will have every chance to thrive. To say that the early results provided by Irish-based No Nay Never are promising is to sell them short. G1SW No Nay Never was Europe’s leading first-season sire of 2018, with six of his progeny winning black-type races at two. These stakes winners, now numbering eight from his first Northern Hemisphere crop, include Ten Sovereigns, winner of the G1 Middle Park and G3 Round Tower, and Land Force, first in the G2 Richmond. As you might expect, after the heartbreak of losing Scat Daddy just as his star was on the rise, Coolmore invested heavily in his stock, with a monopoly on all five of his Northern Hemisphere G1-winning sons that have retired to stud. Yes, Scat Daddy’s loss was monumental, but there is every reason to believe that his short time with us will be felt for many generations to follow.

He was so much the best in winning the Derby it was ridiculous. He disputed a very fast pace on a sloppy, unbiased surface, and three of the four horses who were involved with him early finished a badly beaten 12 th , 13 th and 15 th . Yet despite being under that sort of severe early pace pressure, he still drew away from his field through the stretch. “ “ Mike Watchmaker ,

One of the first SCAT DADDYs to stud was NO NAY NEVER, the 2018 Champion Freshman Sire in Europe, by some margin! Justify has within his blood a bit of a trump card: his sire, Scat Daddy. Bloodstock and breeding experts agree that Scat Daddy was poised to become one of the hottest sires in North America but died an early death at age 11 in 2015. That Justify could carry Scat Daddy's genes forward could be a bigger boon to his breeding career than his Triple Crown victory will be.

Mendelssohn, produced by Broodmare of the Year Leslie's Lady and a $3m yearling acquisition, proved the versatility that is Scat Daddy's legacy by winning the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and following up in 2018 by winning the $2m UAE Derby on dirt…. A shade under 16.1 hands, Mendelssohn offers breeders brilliance both top and bottom. The Scat Daddy heritage provides five immediate sire ancestors who all were Grade/Group 1 winners at two, and Mendelssohn's famous half-siblings [Beholder and Into Mischief] achieved the same feat. Just as importantly, Into Mischief has evolved into one of North

America's most successful sires. RACING P O ST , 8th January 2019

The fastest son of sire of sires Fastnet Rock , he’s bred on the same Danehill / Snippets cross as Snitzel and Hinchinbrook . All things considered, he’s a serious sire prospect.
