Merchant Navy

For a number of years our team have searched for the right son of Fastnet Rock to join his sire at Coolmore Australia. In Merchant Navy, we feel that we have found a colt that may ultimately take the mantle from Fastnet Rock himself and we are delighted that he will join the Coolmore Australia roster for 2018. He has the perfect mix of speed, pedigree and good-looks to really excite commercial breeders. As genuine outcrosses to the Danehill line, we believe our young sire sensations Pierro and So You Think can be cornerstones of the Australasian breeding industry well into the future. In order to offer breeders more high-quality alternatives to the Danehill line, 2018 sees the introduction of Caravaggio and Churchill, two exceptional sons of two exceptional stallions in Scat Daddy and Galileo. We were overwhelmed by the reception received by American Pharoah in his first year and are particularly looking forward to the arrival of his foals in the spring. His first crop in the US has been earning rave reviews as they graduate into their yearling year and we are very fortunate to be able

to offer a horse of his calibre to the Australasian market. The record-breaking efforts of Coolmore graduate Winx have been another highlight of the last 12 months. Scarcely have we experienced an atmosphere on a racecourse like there was at Randwick in April when she claimed her 18th consecutive Group 1 win. A total of 75 stakes winning graduates, including 17 individual Gr.1 winners, since the start of 2015 further emphasises the excellence of our farm at Jerrys Plains and the team behind it at producing racehorses of the highest calibre. Our aim is to help breeders realise their goals and dreams and we believe we have the horses to achieve this. I am very excited by what the future holds for Coolmore Australia. Wishing you continued success in racing and breeding.

Gary Crispe of Timeform, after the Cox Plate-Gr.1

Brilliant Cox Plate-Gr.1 winner from the Sadler’s Wells sire line, just like So You Think

Adelaide took my attention early because of his wonderful 3yo career having seven starts in five countries and performing at the highest level. I bought two colts for Darren Weir and together with David Hall bred a nice filly by him. They had a good look about them and in some ways he reminds me of the stallion Scenic who ended up being a very successful sire.

‘Brilliant’

Crowned Champion two-year-old colt in Europe after his brilliant juvenile season, Timeform rated Air Force Blue at 128p , the best juvenile for the past 20 years in Europe with the exception of Frankel (Galileo). The mark is higher than that of Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winners Pierro (Lonhro) (127), Capitalist (Written Tycoon) (122), Sepoy (Elusive Quality) (124+) and Sebring (More Than Ready) (123).

“History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.” Sir Winston Churchill Seventy six years to the day after Winston Churchill delivered his ‘finest hour’ speech in the House of Commons, the Aidan O’Brien trained Churchill carved out his own piece of history by becoming the first son of Galileo to score at Royal Ascot as a two-year-old. He went undefeated for the remainder of the season and was crowned European Champion 2-Year-Old. Then he recorded the Guineas double the following spring making it four straight Group 1 wins. What’s more Churchill is in the same mould as Frankel being a European Champion 2-Year-Old and Classic-winning miler by the great Galileo out of a leading black-type performer over 1000m. A deep-chested, imposing colt who, on looks at any rate, is built for speed rather than distance The Sunday Telegraph , 7th May 2017, after the 2,000 Guineas-Gr.1 By GALILEO - 11 sons have sired Gr.1 winners including Teofilo, Frankel etc. Full-brother to CLEMMIE - Gr.1 winner over 1200m and European Champion 2YO Filly of 2017. Out of MEOW - runner-up in the Queen Mary S.-Gr.2 over 1000m at Royal Ascot as a 2YO. His grandam AIRWAVE is a Gr.1-winning 2yo over 1200m and she is a half-sister to JWALA , a Gr.1 winner over 1000m.

Rock Solid. Ours certainly is. He’s just had another fantastic season getting more Aus/NZ Gr.1 winners ( 5 ) than any other sire in Australia. And what’s more, three of his sons sired Gr.1 winners. He’s also got two of the highest-priced yearlings in Australia at $2,300,000 and $1,800,000 . He has sired some of the best 3yo’s in Merchant Navy (colt), Shoals (filly) and Unforgotten (filly). And he’s got two of the best 2yo’s in Long Leaf (colt) and Avantage (filly). And a top-class 4yo in Comin’ Through .

In short, he’s on a roll and he’s rock solid in every department.

Merchant Navy steams home to win Coolmore Stud Stakes … the spectacular Group I Coolmore Stud Stakes win of Merchant Navy… the colt was near last in the Flemington straight before surging home to score a breathtaking win Ben Dorries , www.racenet.com.au, 4th November 2017

THE win of the Spring

The Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) is now recognised as one of Australia’s stallion making races… it became a major sprint contest for three-year-olds in 1969 with that year’s winner, champion sire Vain (Wilkes), establishing a high standard at stud for later winners to emulate. Among those later winners to match or better Vain ’s breeding influence are champion sires Century (Better Boy) and Encosta De Lago (Fairy King) while a number of others such as Kaapstad (Sir Tristram), Zeditave (The Judge) and Bureaucracy (Lord Ballina) have been very useful sires. More recent Coolmore Stud Stakes winners include Northern Meteor (Encosta De Lago), Star Witness (Starcraft) and Sepoy (Elusive Quality)... Last Saturday’s renewal of the Coolmore Stud Stakes attracted a field of 20 down the straight course at Flemington and was among the most competitive and memorable as it produced a dramatic finish with superbly bred colt Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock) darting through on the rails close to home… [to] likely cement a future spot on the Coolmore Stud stallion roster as a successor to his father Fastnet Rock (Danehill), twice champion sire in Australia and already represented by successful young sire sons… Legally Bay comes from an outstanding female line and has proved a fine producer… Merchant Navy certainly has the depth of pedigree to become a good sire Les Young , 8th Nov. 2017

A success story that started in the 1820’s

The land now farmed by Coolmore at Jerrys Plains, New South Wales, has a long association with horses going back to the 1820’s when its owner George Bowman had a sire called Pegasus. In the 1890’s the Ellis family stood a top Clydesdale stallion by the name of Gallant Scotchman. Then in the early part of the twentieth century the Moses brothers, William and Frederick, stood or bred outstanding thoroughbreds such as St Alwyne, Valais, Nightwatch, Poitrel, Heroic, Manfred and Valicare. There have been 54 Gr.1-winning graduates of Coolmore Australia since 1996 including champion sprinter and champion sire Fastnet Rock and the brilliant juveniles Pride of Dubai and Vancouver. More recently 9 have been Gr.1 winners since the start of 2017 including the remarkable triple Cox Plate winner Winx, Pinot, Mighty Boss, Unforgotten, Catchy, Oh Susanna, Inference and Avantage. It’s a success story because great horses start with good land, and at Coolmore Australia we take great care of both. Every horse - all the way through the foaling, rearing, weaning and breaking in processes - is treated as if it could be the next champion. And it might even be one of yours!

17 GR.1 WINNERS since 2015

54 GR.1 WINNERS since 1996

One of the first sires Coolmore shuttled to Australia, Last Tycoon , became champion sire in 1993. It’s a feat Danehill went on to achieve no less than nine times, while Encosta de Lago (pictured in bronze) and Fastnet Rock have two titles each.
