Why Triple Crown champs Justify and American Pharoah remain stars By Katherine Terrell, , 3 rd May 2019
… at Coolmore's Ashford Stud in Versailles, Kentucky, two Triple Crown-winning colts are trying to make their own history… American Pharoah, a Triple Crown winner in 2015, has lived there for four years, and his first foals have already hit the track. In that time, Justify
has come and gone from the track, where he won six races and swept the 2018 Triple Crown before retiring... … After Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978, there was a 37-year drought before American Pharoah came along to sweep the series himself. It had been so long that
4
it was perceived to be an impossible feat in modern horse racing. Justify, on the other hand, was never beaten... Because he didn't race as a 2-year-old, his feat was also considered almost impossible. … In essence, Justify and American Pharoah are living history. It's no wonder they draw regular visitors. Bob Baffert, who trained both colts, visits whenever he's in Kentucky. Justify's former exercise rider, Humberto Gomez, stopped by for a visit days before this year's Kentucky Derby…
… Considering American Pharoah's sire unexpectedly died this year and Justify's sire also died young, they are worth their weight in gold. … It will be years before American Pharoah and Justify establish a legacy in the breeding shed. If all goes well, they could produce the next generation of great horses. Perhaps one day they will sire a Triple Crown winner of their own.

Air Force Blue excelled at that age too and was rated Europe’s best juvenile with a rating of 124, after winning three consecutive Gr.1 races. He took the Phoenix Stakes over six furlongs and both the National Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes over seven. Bred by Arthur Hancock III at Stone Farm Air Force Blue is the best juvenile by War Front, the remarkable son of Danzig who has sired more than 6 per cent Graded/Group winners on his way to becoming the U.S.’s highest-priced stallion in 2019. Air Force Blue’s second dam, Circle of Gold, is a sister to Flanders, America’s Champion 2YO filly of 1994, when she won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Air Force Blue has the advantage of having none of the SEATTLE SLEW blood which helped Flanders produce the multiple Gr.1 winner and champion Surfside. War Front has Graded winners from mares by A.P. INDY , PULPIT (19 per cent black-type winners) and TAPIT . It was a TAPIT mare which produced a $400,000 colt from Air Force Blue’s first crop while a $290,000 filly is out of a MALIBU MOON mare. War Front has several good winners with two lines to DANZIG , including the Gr.1 winners War Flag, Hit It A Bomb (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf) and Brave Anna. Air Force Blue should shine with mares from the prolific male line of MR PROSPECTOR . War Front has Gr.1 winners out of mares by FORTY NINER , MISWAKI , SMART STRIKE , WOODMAN and SEEKING THE GOLD . Other sons of War Front have already sired Graded winners from daughters of GULCH , SPEIGHTSTOWN , CITY ZIP , TRIPPI and STREET SENSE . War Front has four SW’s from his first 26 foals out of UNBRIDLED’S SONG mares (15%). Mares from the SADLER’S WELLS line should also shine with Air Force Blue, who had a $350,000 first-crop colt out of a grand-daughter of SADLER’S WELLS . War Front has 21% black-type winners with SADLER’S WELLS mares, including the 2019 Preakness Stakes winner War of Will and two Gr.1 two-year-old winners. He also has three Gr.1 winners out of daughters of GALILEO , a Gr.2 winner from an EL PRADO mare and a Gr.3 winner from a MONTJEU mare. Mares by MEDAGLIA D’ORO and KITTEN’S JOY are likeable options for Air Force Blue. At least eight other grandsons of Danzig have sired Gr.1 winners from STORM CAT line mares, therefore daughters of TALE OF THE CAT , GIANT’S CAUSEWAY and SCAT DADDY should be guaranteed to produce good 2YOs. The ROBERTO male line should also suit well, as War Front has top-class Graded winners from daughters of DYNAFORMER , RED RANSOM and ARCH . He also has Gr.1/Gr.2 winners with second dams by SILVER HAWK .

JOJO WARRIOR Carson City Deputy Minister Gr.2 NOLDE Dixie Union Pulpit Gr.2 POSITIVE SPIRIT In Excess Somethingfabulous Gr.2 MATING SUGGESTIONS: As a juvenile American Pharoah won the Gr.1 Del Mar Futurity and Gr.1 FrontRunner Stakes resulting in the compilers of the Experimental Free Handicap awarding him joint-top weight. American Pharoah then secured the Eclipse Award and he justified all the confidence shown in him when dominating in every leg of the Triple Crown and winning the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Classic in track record time. In the process he showed all the talent, versatility, durability and courage which entitle him to the greatest respect as a stallion. He is now passing on his 2YO excellence, siring four Stakes winners before the end of October. American Pharoah’s bloodlines make him particularly valuable. His pedigree is free of such as A.P. INDY , SEATTLE SLEW , DANZIG , SADLER’S WELLS , DEPUTY MINISTER , ROBERTO and HALO . Mr Prospector is back in the sixth generation of his foals, Fappiano in the fifth and even Storm Cat will be back in the fourth generation. Empire Maker sired Gr.1 winners from mares by three different sons of SEATTLE SLEW , including champion Royal Delta from an A.P. INDY mare. Empire Maker’s son Bodemeister sired the fast American Anthem from an A.P. INDY mare and a Gr.3 winner from a MINESHAFT mare. American Pharoah must be a prime candidate for daughters of A.P INDY and his sons. His high-priced second-crop yearlings included a $950,000 colt with a MALIBU MOON dam, a $500,000 colt out of an A.P. INDY mare and a $410,000 filly with a dam by TAPIT . American Pharoah already has his first black-type earner with a dam by TAPIT . Empire Maker sired 14% black-type winners from daughters of SEEKING THE GOLD . There are numerous other options from this MR PROSPECTOR male line. American Pharoah’s first Group winner, the speedy Maven, is out of a grand-daughter of DISTORTED HUMOR and his DQ-ed Gr.3 winner Skygaze is out of a MARQUETRY mare. SMART STRIKE ranks as the broodmare sire of his second-crop yearling which sold for $1,300,000. American Pharoah has made a bright start with the SADLER’S WELLS line. Gr.1-placed Monarch of Egypt is his first runner out of a GALILEO mare, while Saratoga black-type winner Another Miracle is his first starter out of a MEDAGLIA D’ORO mare. He also has a $525,000 second-crop yearling with a dam by SADLER’S WELLS . MARIA’S MON sired the dam of American Pharoah’s Gr.1-placed son American Theorem and Maria’s Mon’s son SUPER SAVER is broodmare sire of a second-crop colt which sold for $800,000. Pioneerof The Nile likes the HAIL TO REASON line and American Pharoah sired ‘TDN Rising Star’ Princesa Caroline from a SAINT BALLADO mare and Gr.2 winner Four Wheel Drive from a MORE THAN READY mare. Mares by GIANT’S CAUSEWAY and other sons of Storm Cat create only 4x3 to STORM CAT . Empire Maker sired Bodemeister and In Lingerie from daughters of STORM CAT and Eight Rings from a grand-daughter. In addition to American Pharoah, Pioneerof The Nile sired the Champion 2YO Classic Empire from a grand-daughter of STORM CAT . It is no surprise then to see that American Pharoah has already sired his first Gr.2 winner from a mare by DISCREET CAT while his impressive MSW winners Emily’s Oasis and Homeland have grandams by TABASCO CAT and STORM CAT respectively. Therefore mares by sires such as TALE OF THE CAT , FOREST WILDCAT , HENNESSY , FORESTRY , INTO MISCHIEF and SCAT DADDY will surely suit American Pharoah. Empire Maker sired a Gr.1 winner from a mare by Danzig, plus Gr.2 winners from mares by Danzig’s sons BELONG TO ME and PINE BLUFF . This suggests American Pharoah could thrive with mares by other dirt performers by DANZIG , such as WAR FRONT and HARD SPUN . Empire Maker and Pioneerof The Nile both have black-type winners from a TOUCH GOLD mare. This suggests daughters of AWESOME AGAIN , DEHERE (sire of the grandam of American Pharoah’s Stakes winner Another Miracle) and GHOSTZAPPER , especially when Pioneerof The Nile has a Gr.3 winner juvenile with a dam by GHOSTZAPPER . A daughter of IN EXCESS produced Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming to Bodemeister and INDIAN CHARLIE sired the dams of a $2,200,000 first-crop colt and a $975,000 second-crop filly suggesting daughters of UNCLE MO will thrive with American Pharoah. 13

Book 1 finishes with a bang When the dust settled, an $8.2-million American Pharoah half-sister to Into Mischief , Beholder and Mendelssohn stood out as the clear session, Book 1 and highly probably sale topper [and the most expensive filly ever at Keeneland Sept.]. Mandy Pope of Whisper Hill Farm outlasted a determined Sheikh Mohammed of Godolphin to take home the bay filly, who was consigned by her breeder Clarkland Farm TDN, 12th Sept. 2019

MATING SUGGESTIONS: When the voters nominated their 2016 Eclipse Award champions, Classic Empire took the 2YO male title with a landslide 248 votes out of a possible 248. He dominated his generation throughout the year, from the moment he made a winning debut three days before the Kentucky Derby. Fast enough to take the Gr.3 Bashford Manor Stakes over six furlongs in early July, Classic Empire was much the best in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Futurity and showed courage, as well as class, in repelling Not This Time’s challenge in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Classic Empire trained on well too, notably taking the Gr.1 Arkansas Derby and being beaten only a head in the Gr.1 Preakness. He has the pedigree of a potentially high-class stallion. He is bred along similar lines to Triple Crown hero American Pharoah (both by Pioneerof The Nile from grand-daughters of Storm Cat). He also shares the same sire as Cairo Prince (five black-type winners in a first crop sired at only $10,000). Like American Pharoah, Classic Empire enjoys the significant benefit of having a pedigree free of such as A.P. INDY , SEATTLE SLEW , DANZIG , SADLER’S WELLS , DEPUTY MINISTER , ROBERTO and HALO . Mr Prospector will be no closer than the fifth and sixth generations of his foals’ pedigrees. Storm Cat will be back in the fourth generation and Fappiano the fifth, allowing a second line to either. Empire Maker sired Gr.1 winners from mares by three different sons of SEATTLE SLEW , including champion Royal Delta from an A.P. INDY mare. Empire Maker’s son Bodemeister has sired the fast Gr.2 winner American Anthem from an A.P. INDY mare and a Gr.3 winner from a MINESHAFT mare. Classic Empire must be a prime candidate for daughters of A.P INDY and his sons, such as PULPIT , MALIBU MOON and MINESHAFT . The similarly-bred American Pharoah had high-priced second-crop yearlings out of daughters of MALIBU MOON , A.P. INDY and TAPIT . BERNARDINI mares have 13% black-type winners with Pioneerof The Nile. Empire Maker sired 14% black-type winners from daughters of SEEKING THE GOLD . There are numerous other options from this MR PROSPECTOR male line, including KINGMAMBO , CARSON CITY , SMART STRIKE , CURLIN , DISTORTED HUMOR , SPEIGHTSTOWN and STREET CRY . American Pharoah’s first Group winner, the speedy Maven, is out of a grand-daughter of DISTORTED HUMOR . American Pharoah has made a bright start with SADLER’S WELLS line mares. The Gr.1-placed Monarch of Egypt is his first runner out of a GALILEO mare, while the Saratoga black-type winner Another Miracle is his first starter out of a MEDAGLIA D’ORO mare. Classic Empire should therefore suit mares by GALILEO , EL PRADO , MEDAGLIA D’ORO and KITTEN’S JOY . The Champion 2YO MARIA’S MON sired the dam of American Pharoah’s Gr.1-placed son American Theorem and Maria’s Mon’s son SUPER SAVER is broodmare sire of a second-crop American Pharoah colt which sold for $800,000. Pioneerof The Nile did well with the HAIL TO REASON line as Vinceremos is from a MORE THAN READY mare and Social Inclusion is from a SAINT BALLADO mare. American Pharoah is now replicating Pioneerof The Nile’s success, siring the ‘TDN Rising Star’ Princesa Caroline from a SAINT BALLADO mare and the Gr.2 winner Four Wheel Drive from a daughter of MORE THAN READY . Mares by GIANT’S CAUSEWAY and other sons of Storm Cat create only 4x3 to STORM CAT . This is a likeable option, as Empire Maker sired Bodemeister and In Lingerie from daughters of STORM CAT and the 2019 2yo Gr.1 winner Eight Rings from a grand-daughter. American Pharoah has already sired a Gr.2 winner from a mare by DISCREET CAT . Empire Maker sired a Gr.1 winner from a mare by Danzig, plus Gr.2 winners from mares by Danzig’s sons BELONG TO ME and PINE BLUFF . This suggests Classic Empire could thrive with mares by other dirt performers by DANZIG , such as WAR FRONT , HARD SPUN and EXCHANGE RATE . Empire Maker and Pioneerof The Nile have both sired black-type winners from a daughter of TOUCH GOLD . This suggests daughters of AWESOME AGAIN , DEHERE and GHOSTZAPPER , especially when Pioneerof The Nile has a Gr.3-winning juvenile with a dam by GHOSTZAPPER . A daughter of IN EXCESS produced the Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming to Bodemeister and the Gr.2 winner Positive Thinking to Pioneerof The Nile. In Excess’s son INDIAN CHARLIE sired the dams of American Pharoah’s $2,200,000 first-crop colt. This suggests that daughters of UNCLE MO are well worth trying with him. HOLY BULL is the broodmare sire of Cairo Prince, another of Pioneerof The Nile’s best sons. 19
