and six, and INTO MISCHIEF , a Gr.1-winning 2yo who had started so well as a stallion that his fee had risen from $7,500 to $45,000. Consequently, the Scat Daddy youngster topped the sale at $3m, by a margin of $1m. Named Mendelssohn, he didn’t take long to justify his price. After finishing second in Europe’s top juvenile race, the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes, Mendelssohn travelled to Del Mar to win the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. But he isn’t a one-dimensional turf horse. He began his 3yo campaign with a Listed victory on all-weather in Ireland and then won the Gr.2 UAE Derby on dirt by over 18 lengths, to earn a shot at the Kentucky Derby. Unfortunately, he was unable to give his true running at Churchill Downs after being badly bumped in the early stages, but he has since confirmed his talent on dirt, taking second place in the Gr.1 Travers Stakes and third in the Gr.1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. There is every reason to expect Mendelssohn will prove highly effective as a stallion. SCAT DADDY has underlined his importance with the Triple Crown victories of his brilliant son Justify in a year when another son, NO NAY NEVER , has run away with the title of European champion first-crop sire. At the same time INTO MISCHIEF has continued his upward trajectory, to the extent that his fee has been raised for 2019 to $150,000 and is booked full. Much of Into Mischief’s success has been based on the MR PROSPECTOR line. His Gr.1 winners Practical Joke and Goldencents are both out of grand-daughters of FORTY NINER . It was a grand-daughter of Forty Niner, by END SWEEP , who produced Scat Daddy’s very fast daughter Acapulco, so this is definitely an area which must be tried with Mendelssohn. There is ample scope to add extra lines of MR PROSPECTOR . Into Mischief has two black-type winners out of CARSON CITY mares and a Gr.3 winner out of a mare by Carson City’s son FIVE STAR DAY . Others are out of mares by GONE WEST’s sons SPEIGHTSTOWN (Gr.2 winner Mia Mischief), GRAND SLAM and PROUD CITIZEN , so mares by SPEIGHTSTOWN should bring out the best in Mendelssohn. Mares by MR GREELEY and ELUSIVE QUALITY should also suit, especially when Scat Daddy sired the very successful No Nay Never from an ELUSIVE QUALITY mare. Much of Scat Daddy’s success in Chile was based on mares by Gone West’s son SEEKER’S REWARD , with the U.S. Gr.1 winner Dacita being an excellent example. Scat Daddy also sired Graded winners from mares by SMART STRIKE and his son CURLIN . Two other grandsons of MR PROSPECTOR which have done well with Scat Daddy are STREET CRY (broodmare sire of 2018 Gr.1 2yo winner Skitter Scatter) and THUNDER GULCH . Other MR PROSPECTOR line stallions which appear among the broodmare sires of Into Mischief’s Graded winners are LEMON DROP KID , LINE IN THE SAND and VICTORY GALLOP . Scat Daddy has sired Graded winners from mares by UNBRIDLED’S SONG and his sons SONGANDAPRAYER and ROCKPORT HARBOR . This suggests that mares by EMPIRE MAKER , BROKEN VOW , PIONEEROF THE NILE and BODEMEISTER are well worth trying. Scat Daddy enjoyed Graded success with several mares from the SEATTLE SLEW line, siring Gr.1 winners from mares by HOUSTON and SKY MESA . TAPIT’s daughters have made an encouraging start with Scat Daddy and Into Mischief has a Gr.2 performer out of a TAPIT mare. Scat Daddy owes several of his stakes winners, including a Gr.1 winner, to DANZIG line mares. His son No Nay Never is excelling with mares descending from Danzig’s son DANEHILL , so this should also work with Mendelssohn. Scat Daddy sired the great Justify from a mare by GHOSTZAPPER and he also has two good performers out of mares by AWESOME AGAIN , as well as a Gr.3 winner from a FRENCH DEPUTY mare. His Gr.1 winner Celestine has a second dam by DEHERE . This suggests that Mendelssohn should be tried with mares with DEPUTY MINISTER blood. Scat Daddy’s exceptionally fast daughter Lady Aurelia is inbred 4x3 to STORM CAT , as she has a dam by FOREST WILDCAT so there is ample scope for more STORM CAT blood for Mendelssohn. HOLY BULL mares did very well with Scat Daddy, notably producing the top 2yo and sprinter Caravaggio.
