Munnings was one of the colts which helped put Speightstown on the map. He achieved the second-highest price of $1,700,000 at Calder in February 2008 and was placed in the Gr.1 Hopeful S. and Gr.1 Champagne S. At three he had more than five lengths in hand when he took the Gr.2 Woody Stephens Stakes and defeated older sprinters in the Gr.2 Tom Fool Handicap. Munnings held his form well and was back in the winner’s circle after the Gr.2 Gulfstream Park Sprint Championship at four. From a first crop sired at only $12,500, Munnings has achieved a highly impressive percentage of black-type winners, with the Gr.1 winners I’m A Chatterbox and El Deal heading his team of six first-crop Graded winners. He already has eight black-type winners from a small second crop, and has maintained his high strike rate with a smaller third crop. That’s 23 black-type winners - an inspirational 10 per cent - among his first 219 foals, sired at fees of $12,500 or less. Even his fifth crop - yearlings of 2017 - were sired at only $10,000, but have sold for up to $280,000. What might he achieve now that he has earned a substantial rise in his fee? Munnings sired his first Gr.1 winner, that fine filly I’m A Chatterbox, from a grand-daughter of DANZIG and the Gr.3 winner Munny Spunt from a HARD SPUN mare. Speightstown already has Gr.2 and Gr.3 winners inbred 3x3 to Storm Cat, therefore Munnings should enjoy plenty of success with mares from the Storm Cat line. Sure enough, he has already sired the Gr.2 winner Om from a grand-daughter of STORM CAT , creating 4x3 to STORM CAT . Munnings already has a Gr.2 winner out of a mare by Giant’s Causeway’s brother FREUD . Munnings’ early results suggest he has a future with SADLER’S WELLS and NUREYEV line mares. He has a Gr.2 winner with a dam by EL PRADO , plus Listed winners with dams by EL PRADO’s sons MEDAGLIA D’ORO and BORREGO . Munnings has another Listed winner with a dam by Sadler’s Wells’s son PERFECT SOUL . There is another with a dam by THEATRICAL , a son of NUREYEV . The NIJINSKY branch of the NORTHERN DANCER male line also comes into the picture, as Munnings has a Gr.3 winner with a dam by SKY CLASSIC . Speightstown has several good performers inbred either 3x3 or 3x4 to MR PROSPECTOR , including the Travers Stakes winner Golden Ticket, the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Tamarkuz and the fast filly Lighthouse Bay. Munnings already has Listed winners from the UNBRIDLED , GONE WEST and FORTY NINER branches. Speightstown has Gr.3 winners out of mares by three different sons of SEATTLE SLEW , including A.P. INDY . Mares by PULPIT , MINESHAFT and MALIBU MOON all create 4x4 to Mr Prospector and with TAPIT that would be 4x5. BLUSHING GROOM sired the second dams of Speightstown’s Gr.1 winners Seek Again and Lord Shanakill. Munnings’ Gr.3 winner No Problem has a dam by BLUSHING GROOM’s grandson ORIENTATE .
