Air Force Blue excelled at that age in England and Ireland and was rated Europe’s best 2YO with a Timeform rating of 128p, after winning three consecutive Gr.1 races. He took the Phoenix Stakes over six furlongs and both the National Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes over seven. A $490,000 yearling, Air Force Blue comes from the sixth crop by War Front whose previous five crops had all been sired at fees of €15,000 or less. The son of Danzig has amassed an impressive percentage of Graded/Group winners, with 36 among the 399 runners from his first 7 crops - this equates to a world-class figure of more than 9 per cent and War Front seems destined to follow in Danzig’s footsteps as an important sire of sires. 6

Although Air Force Blue made his name on turf, both his parents and both his grandsires did all their winning on dirt, so he is entitled to prove as versatile as War Front regarding his progeny’s surface requirements. His second dam, Circle of Gold, is a sister to Flanders, America’s champion two-year-old filly of 1994 and dam of another American champion Surfside. Air Force Blue has the advantage of having none of the SEATTLE SLEW blood which helped Flanders produce the multiple Gr.1 winner Surfside. War Front has sired Graded winners from mares by A.P. INDY and his son PULPIT , achieving an impressive 21 per cent black-type winners with daughters of PULPIT . This suggests daughters of TAPIT could play to Air Force Blue’s strengths. War Front has several good winners inbred 2x4 to DANZIG , including the Gr.1 winners War Flag, Hit It A Bomb (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf) and Brave Anna. Some of these good winners have dams by ARCH , who was out of a DANZIG mare. Mares by sons of DANZIG will create 3x3 inbreeding. The great MR PROSPECTOR , who has combined extremely well with the Danzig male line, will be back in the fifth and sixth generations of Air Force Blue’s foals. This means he has plenty of scope to shine with mares from this prolific male line. War Front has Gr.1 winners out of mares by FORTY NINER , MISWAKI , SMART STRIKE and WOODMAN . Other sons of War Front have already sired Graded winners from daughters of GULCH , CITY ZIP and Forty Niner’s grandson TRIPPI , The FAPPIANO branch is another attractive option, as War Front has three black-type winners from his first 20 foals out of UNBRIDLED’S SONG mares, as well as a Gr.2 winner from a GRINDSTONE mare. Air Force Blue is well worth trying with mares by Mr Prospector’s grandsons, such as STREET CRY (War Front has two black-type winners from his first six foals) and ELUSIVE QUALITY . Mares from the SADLER’S WELLS line should also shine with Air Force Blue. War Front has two Gr.1 2YO winners out of a SADLER’S WELLS mare, two Gr.1 winners out of a GALILEO mare (including 2017 Dewhurst Stakes and Middle Park Stakes winner U S Navy Flag) and a Gr.2 winner out of an EL PRADO mare. Mares by MEDAGLIA D’ORO and KITTEN’S JOY are therefore likeable options. At least six other grandsons of Danzig have sired Gr.1 winners from STORM CAT line mares, including from daughters of GIANT’S CAUSEWAY , HENNESSY , TALE OF THE CAT and FOREST WILDCAT . Mares by SCAT DADDY should be guaranteed to produce good 2YO’s. War Front has Graded winners from mares by two BLUSHING GROOM line stallions, including the top-class Declaration of War from a RAHY mare. The ROBERTO male line should also suit well, as War Front has Graded winners from daughters of DYNAFORMER and RED RANSOM , and from mares by ARCH , a son of KRIS S . He also has Gr.1 and Gr.2 winners with second dams by SILVER HAWK .

Fappiano’s son Unbridled gave this male line its first success in a Triple Crown event when he won the 1990 Kentucky Derby. Two other sons of Fappiano made an impact on the Triple Crown, with the two colts who dominated the 1998 races being by Quiet American and Cryptoclearance. It has been Unbridled, though, who has been the male line’s main flagbearer. He sired winners of each of the Triple Crown races and his Kentucky Derby winner Grindstone went on to sire a Belmont Stakes winner, who in turn sired winners of the Kentucky Derby and Belmont. Unbridled’s son Empire Maker found only one too good for him in the Kentucky Derby as did Empire Maker’s son Pioneerof The Nile. Although American Pharoah wasn’t able to contest the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, he had been so impressive in winning the Gr.1 Del Mar Futurity and Gr.1 FrontRunner Stakes that the compilers of the Experimental Free Handicap felt compelled to award him joint-top weight with the Juvenile winner. He secured the Eclipse Award and of course justified all the confidence shown in him, extending his winning sequence to eight. In the process he showed all the talent, versatility, durability and courage which entitle him to the greatest respect as a stallion. His pedigree is a blend of speed and stamina, as his dam Littleprincessemma is closely related to Storm Wolf (Gr.2 Lazaro Barrera Memorial over 7f.) and Misty Rosette (Gr.3 winner over 6½f.). American Pharoah’s bloodlines allow him tremendous scope. Mr Prospector will be back in the sixth generation of his foals and his pedigree is free of such as A.P. INDY , SEATTLE SLEW , DANZIG , SADLER’S WELLS , DEPUTY MINISTER , ROBERTO and HALO . Even STORM CAT will be back in the fourth generation of his foals and FAPPIANO in the fifth, allowing a second line. 10

Empire Maker sired Gr.1 winners from mares by three different sons of SEATTLE SLEW , including the three-time champion Royal Delta from an A.P. INDY mare. Altogether he sired 8% black-type winners from daughters of A.P. INDY . American Pharoah must be a prime candidate for daughters of A.P. INDY and his sons, especially those who combine A.P. INDY with MR PROSPECTOR , such as PULPIT , MALIBU MOON and MINESHAFT . Daughters of TAPIT would have every chance of transmitting American Pharoah’s Triple Crown prowess, as they create 4x4 to UNBRIDLED . The same could be said of daughters of BERNARDINI , broodmare sire of Pioneerof The Nile’s Gr.3 winner Dark Nile. Empire Maker sired 16% black-type winners from daughters of SEEKING THE GOLD . There are numerous other options from this MR PROSPECTOR male line, including KINGMAMBO , CARSON CITY , SMART STRIKE , CURLIN , DISTORTED HUMOR , SPEIGHTSTOWN (4x4 to Storm Cat) and STREET CRY . Mares by GIANT’S CAUSEWAY and other sons of Storm Cat create only 4x3 to STORM CAT . This is well worth trying, as Empire Maker sired Bodemeister and In Lingerie from daughters of STORM CAT . In addition to American Pharoah, Pioneerof The Nile sired the champion 2YO Classic Empire from a grand-daughter of STORM CAT . Empire Maker sired a Gr.1 winner from a mare by Danzig, plus Gr.2 winners from mares by BELONG TO ME and PINE BLUFF . This suggests American Pharoah could thrive with mares by other dirt performers by DANZIG , such as WAR FRONT and HARD SPUN . EL PRADO and his sons MEDAGLIA D’ORO and KITTEN’S JOY represent the SADLER’S WELLS line. Empire Maker and Pioneerof The Nile have both sired black-type winners from a daughter of TOUCH GOLD . Pioneerof The Nile also has a Gr.3-winning juvenile with a dam by GHOSTZAPPER . Pioneerof The Nile is shaping up with the HAIL TO REASON line, siring the Gr.3 winner Vinceremos from a MORE THAN READY mare and Preakness third Social Inclusion from a SAINT BALLADO mare. HOLY BULL is the broodmare sire of Cairo Prince, another one of Pioneerof The Nile’s best sons.

It is fair to say that he dominated his generation from the moment he made a winning debut three days before the Kentucky Derby. From then on it was Graded stakes only and he remained unbeaten, except for the time he lost his rider in the Gr.1 Hopeful Stakes. Fast enough to take the Gr.3 Bashford Manor Stakes over six furlongs in early July, Classic Empire was much the best in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Futurity and he showed courage as well as class in repelling Not This Time’s challenge in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile earning a 102 Beyer Speed Figure. Despite this demanding juvenile campaign, Classic Empire trained on well, notably taking the Gr.1 Arkansas Derby and running a head second in the Gr.1 Preakness. A $475,000 Keeneland September yearling, Classic Empire also has the pedigree of a potentially high-class stallion. He’s bred along similar lines to Triple Crown hero American Pharoah, as both were sired by Pioneerof The Nile from grand-daughters of Storm Cat. Like American Pharoah, Classic Empire enjoys the significant benefit of having a pedigree free of such as A.P. INDY , SEATTLE SLEW , DANZIG , SADLER’S WELLS , DEPUTY MINISTER , ROBERTO and HALO . His two lines to Mr Prospector will be no closer than the fifth and sixth generations of his foals’ pedigrees. Even STORM CAT will be back in the fourth generation and Fappiano in the fifth. Empire Maker sired Gr.1 winners from mares by three different sons of SEATTLE SLEW , including Royal Delta from an A.P. INDY mare. Altogether he sired 8% black-type winners from daughters of A.P. INDY . Empire Maker’s son Bodemeister has sired the fast Gr.2 winner American Anthem from an A.P. INDY mare. Classic Empire must be a prime candidate for daughters of A.P. INDY and his sons. Daughters of TAPIT create 4x4 to the powerful classic influence UNBRIDLED . Daughters of BERNARDINI , broodmare sire of Pioneerof The Nile’s Gr.3 winner Dark Nile, should also help Classic Empire sire potential Triple Crown performers. 16

Empire Maker sired a Gr.1 winner from a mare by DANZIG , plus Gr.2 winners from mares by Danzig’s sons BELONG TO ME and PINE BLUFF . This suggests Classic Empire could thrive with mares by other dirt performers by DANZIG , such as WAR FRONT , HARD SPUN and EXCHANGE RATE . EL PRADO and his sons MEDAGLIA D’ORO and KITTEN’S JOY represent the SADLER’S WELLS line. Empire Maker and Pioneerof The Nile have both sired black-type winners from a daughter of TOUCH GOLD . This suggests daughters of AWESOME AGAIN , DEHERE and GHOSTZAPPER , especially as Pioneerof The Nile has a Gr.3-winning juvenile with a dam by GHOSTZAPPER . Pioneerof The Nile is shaping up with the HAIL TO REASON line, siring the Gr.3 winner Vinceremos from a MORE THAN READY mare and Preakness third Social Inclusion from a SAINT BALLADO mare. HOLY BULL is the broodmare sire of Cairo Prince, another of Pioneerof The Nile’s best sons. “…the GI Breeders’Cup Juvenile fell to Classic Empire , a colt by Pioneerof the Nile ... Classic Empire is therefore guaranteed to be popular when the time comes for him to take up stallion duties... American Pharoah [also by Pioneerof the Nile] is out of a granddaughter of Storm Cat and so is Classic Empire ... Breeders will ultimately like the fact that Classic Empire’s female line, descending from Alanesian , produced that very successful sire Harlan’s Holiday .” Andrew Caulfield’s Pedigree Insights , TDN, 7th Nov 2016 ❝ one of the most impressive performances ever seen in the BC Juvenile ~ Steve Haskin , Bloodhorse.com, 20th October 2017

With the champion 2YO Maria’s Mon as his grandsire, Competitive Edge was precocious enough - and fast enough - to score by more than ten lengths over six furlongs at Saratoga in July. He was again impressive when upped to seven furlongs in the Gr.1 Hopeful Stakes, scoring by nearly six lengths. These efforts earned him 121 on the Experimental Free Handicap. He went on to extend his unbeaten record to four as a 3YO, taking the Tamarac Stakes (7f.) and the Gr.3 Pat Day Mile on Derby day. These four wins were gained by a total of nearly 29 lengths. In addition to winning at the top level, Competitive Edge has a potent pedigree. Both of his parents have Seattle Slew and Mr Prospector in the third generation, so Competitive Edge is inbred 4x4 to both of these champion sires. Combining Seattle Slew with Mr Prospector yielded some rich dividends. For example, Super Saver’s dam Supercharger is a sister to three of the 16 Graded winners sired by A.P. Indy from Mr Prospector mares. Another of these 16 is Pulpit, sire of champion sire Tapit, who is inbred 3 x 4 to Mr Prospector, with one line of Seattle Slew. Tapit has numerous Graded winners with a third line of Mr Prospector. Indeed he has Gr.1, Gr.2 and Gr.3 winners with four lines. Scat Daddy, another stallion inbred to Mr Prospector, also has several Graded winners with a third line and his excellent daughters Acapulco and Harmonize have four. More Mr Prospector blood is therefore a promising avenue to explore with Competitive Edge, especially as Super Saver has Graded winners out of mares by DISTANT VIEW and FUSAICHI PEGASUS . As Competitive Edge’s Mr Prospector blood will be in his foals’ fifth generation, there are numerous options, including CARSON CITY , CITY ZIP , DISTORTED HUMOR , FLOWER ALLEY , ELUSIVE QUALITY, SPEIGHTSTOWN , MR GREELEY , KINGMAMBO , STREET CRY and SMART STRIKE . The FAPPIANO branch would help Competitive Edge’s progeny shine around two turns. UNBRIDLED , EMPIRE MAKER , UNBRIDLED’S SONG and PIONEEROF THE NILE have obvious potential, and BROKEN VOW is the broodmare sire of Super Saver’s very fast son Runhappy. Super Saver’s 2YO Gr.2 winner I Spent It is inbred 3x4 to A.P. INDY , mares with another line of SEATTLE SLEW , A.P. INDY or even TAPIT , could succeed with Competitive Edge. This could work, as the smart 2017 sprinter Coal Front is inbred 3x3 to A.P. INDY and 4x4x4 to SEATTLE SLEW . The STORM CAT line is another that could reinforce Competitive Edge’s speed. Tapit has Graded winners out of 20

daughters of STORM CAT , HENNESSY , SIR CAT , TABASCO CAT , BLUEGRASS CAT , FORESTRY , GIANT’S CAUSEWAY , CATIENUS , MENIFEE and HARLAN’S HOLIDAY. Other NORTHERN DANCER lines which should work well are those descending from DEPUTY MINISTER , DIXIELAND BAND and EL PRADO , including daughters of AWESOME AGAIN , GHOSTZAPPER , MEDAGLIA D’ORO and KITTEN’S JOY .
