Ashford Handbook 2023

After being Champion first crop sire of 2018, No Nay Never is now Europe’s outstanding sire of 2YOs in 2022 with 6 GSWs. Justify is also making a considerable impact with his first runners. Although Justify didn’t race as a juvenile, plenty of his progeny are showing the precocity we have come to expect of the Scat Daddy male line and he already had 20 winners before the end of October. More importantly, he had four black-type winners, including three Graded winners – more than any other freshman sire. Justify established himself as Scat Daddy’s outstanding son when becoming only the 13th American Triple Crown winner – and only the fifth since 1948 - displaying an exceptional blend of speed and stamina, and he is also an exceptional physical specimen. There is every reason to expect Justify’s versatility to extend to his stallion career. Scat Daddy owed his 53 GSWs in the northern hemisphere to no fewer than 47 different broodmare sires. This suggests that Justify will also work with a wide range of bloodlines, and his first four black-type winners are out of mares from four different male lines. Scat Daddy sired the very successful No Nay Never from an ELUSIVE QUALITY mare while SEEKER’S REWARD is broodmare sire of Gr.1 winner Dacita. Justify’s second black-type winner, the Gr.3 dirt winner Just Cindy, is out of a mare by GONE WEST’s son PROUD CITIZEN . This filly is inbred 4x4 to MR PROSPECTOR and 5x5 to STORM CAT . It was a grand-daughter of Forty Niner, by END SWEEP , who produced Scat Daddy’s very fast daughter Acapulco. Scat Daddy has Graded winners from mares by SMART STRIKE and his son CURLIN . Scat Daddy’s son No Nay Never has two Gr.2 winners out of a mare by ENGLISH CHANNEL . STREET CRY sired the grandam of Justify’s Gr.3 winner Aspen Grove. EMPIRE MAKER mares had 20% SWs with Scat Daddy. Scat Daddy also had Graded winners from mares by UNBRIDLED’S SONG’s sons BUDDHA (Gr.1 winner Valid Point), SONGANDAPRAYER , FIRST DEFENCE and ROCKPORT HARBOR . Justify had a second-crop yearling out of an UNBRIDLED’S SONG mare sell for $1,050,000. Scat Daddy sired Gr.1 winners from SEATTLE SLEW line mares. TAPIT’s daughters produced 43% black-type winners to Scat Daddy. Justify’s first three runners out of BERNARDINI mares are all winners, including the dirt Listed winner Justa Warrior. Justify’s Gr.3 winner Champions Dream is out of a TAPIT mare and is therefore inbred 4x3 to PULPIT . Breeders looking for an outcross should consider using him on their DANZIG line mares, as No Nay Never’s two-time Gr.1 winner Ten Sovereigns has a dam by EXCEED AND EXCEL and his four-time Gr.1 winner daughter Alcohol Free is out of a HARD SPUN mare. No Nay Never has also thrived with mares from the GREEN DESERT branch of the DANZIG line, siring the leading 2022 2YOs Blackbeard, Aesop’s Fables and Trillium. STORM CAT is back in the fifth generation of Justify’s foals, so there is plenty of scope for more STORM CAT blood and his Gr.3 winner Champions Dream is inbred 5x5 to STORM CAT . Justify’s unbeaten Gr.2 winner Statuette has a dam by PIVOTAL (from the NUREYEV line) and a grandam by SADLER’S WELLS . Scat Daddy sired the Gr.1 winner Nickname from a grand-daughter of EL PRADO , so daughters of MEDAGLIA D’ORO and KITTEN’S JOY should be strongly considered for Justify.
