Ashford Handbook 2023

Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar. He also landed the Gr.3 Quick Call Stakes at Saratoga, Gr.2 Woodford Stakes at Keeneland, Gr.2 Shakertown Stakes at Keeneland and Gr.3 Troy Stakes at Saratoga. Golden Pal’s dam Lady Shipman won 13 times, earned over $900,000 and set a course record of 1:00.46 for Saratoga’s 5 ½-furlong turf course. Three of Uncle Mo’s sons Nyquist, Laoban and Outwork, all became Gr.1 sires with their early crops. Although Golden Pal and his dam Lady Shipman excelled on turf, there are numerous top-class dirt performers in his pedigree, with all four of his grandparents having won on the main track. A.P. INDY is absent from Golden Pal’s pedigree and he should do well with mares from that line. Uncle Mo sired Gr.1 winners Yaupon from a mare by VINDICATION and Mo Donegal from a mare by PULPIT . His foals out of mares by BERNARDINI , another of A.P. Indy’s sons, include Gr.1 winner Mo Town and Gr.2 winners Mopotism and Modernist. His Gr.2 winner Celestial City has a dam by MALIBU MOON . Uncle Mo’s son Nyquist owes his two Gr.1 winners to daughters of BERNARDINI and MINESHAFT , and he also has Gr.2 winner Turnerloose out of an A.P. INDY mare. Laoban, another son, sired Gr.2 winner Un Ojo from another A.P. INDY mare. Uncle Mo has thrived with MR PROSPECTOR line mares and Golden Pal should follow suit. The GONE WEST branch provided Uncle Mo with Gr.1 winner Gomo (dam by ELUSIVE QUALITY ) and Gr.2 winner Laoban (dam by SPEIGHTSTOWN ). He also has a Gr.3 winner out of a daughter of SMART STRIKE , while Nyquist has a Gr.2 winner out of a grand-daughter. UNBRIDLED is the broodmare sire of Gr.1 winner Unbridled Mo and three of his sons rank among the broodmare sires of Uncle Mo’s Graded winners. The Gr.1 winner Outwork has an EMPIRE MAKER dam. Golden Pal ranks alongside Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist as one of five Gr.1 winners by Uncle Mo with a Mr Prospector line mare as his second dam. Uncle Mo’s Gr.1 winner Dream Tree has a dam by AFLEET ALEX . Golden Pal’s pedigree is free of STORM CAT , however Uncle Mo quickly proved himself with this line, siring the top-class Nyquist and Gr.3 winner Auntie Joy from daughters of FORESTRY as well as Gr.3 winners from daughters of STORM CAT , GIANT’S CAUSEWAY , BLUEGRASS CAT and TALE OF THE CAT . His Gr.2 winner Harvest Moon has a dam by GIANT’S CAUSEWAY’s son SHAMARDAL and the Graded winners Mo Mosa and Adare Manor are respectively out of mares by GIANT’S CAUSEWAY’s sons ESKENDEREYA and GIANT GIZMO . In view of Golden Pal’s success on turf, the SADLER’S WELLS line is a likeable option with daughters of EL PRADO , MEDAGLIA D’ORO and KITTEN’S JOY are candidates. Uncle Mo has sired Gr.1 or Gr.2 winners from mares by DIXIELAND BAND , by NUREYEV’s son UNUSUAL HEAT and by DANZIG’s son WAR FRONT . Laoban, another son of Uncle Mo, sired Gr.1 winner Simply Ravishing from a MORE THAN READY mare. Uncle Mo’s top-class daughter Bast is inbred 3x2 to ARCH , so the HAIL TO REASON line is a source worth using. Uncle Mo has black-type winners out of daughters of DEPUTY MINISTER , FRENCH DEPUTY and DEFRERE .
